Real Madrid playmaker Rafael van der Vaart is the subject of interest from Liverpool and Arsenal as his Real Madrid career looks to end.

A fire sale has been expected at The Bernabeu ever since the multi-world-record-breaking transfers of Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Fellow Dutchman Wesley Sneijder is expected to complete a £15 million move to Inter as the Spanish giants try to recoup some of their huge financial outlay this summer.

However today provided fresh speculation in The Metro, suggests Arsene Wenger is keen on bringing the Holland international to The Emirates.

The same publication suggests there is still chance of a return to Holland for family reasons with a switch to Martin Jol's Ajax.

Liverpool are in the market for defensive reinforcements and it is believed they have lined up a move for AEK stopper Kyrgiakos.

The Reds have been linked with the likes of Stoke's Ryan Shawcross and Hull's Michael Turner, but Kyrgiakos appears to be a cheaper option for Rafa Benitez.

With reports of Benitez having his transfer budget restricted Liverpool have switched their attentions to Kyrgiakos and they are believed to have agreed a €3million (£2.5million) fee with AEK for the 30-year-old.

Kyrgiakos is understood to have said his goodbyes to his AEK team-mates and is now thought to be travelling to England to hold talks with Liverpool officials and undergo a medical.

Reds linked with
defensive improvements

Anfield Online

After Liverpool’s lethargic display yesterday against Tottenham, the reds are continually being linked with defenders.

Liverpool have so far banked £17M in transfer profits in 2009 and after yesterday’s performance Liverpool will be wise to not only use that profit but also receive some form of summer transfer kitty from the club’s owners.

Fernando Amorebieta is the 24 year old centre-back for Athletic Bilbao who is believed to have been watched in last night’s Spanish ‘Charity Shield’ game against Barcelona according to the Daily Mail.

The player who was born in Venezuala, but has dual nationality has played for Spain’s under 21 side ruling him out of a place with the Venezualan national side.

Liverpool will have to stump up around £10M to secure the defender’s services, and he has over 100 appearances to his name at the Spanish La Liga side.

The reds are also still linked with Michael Turner of Hull, and Ryan Shawcross of Stoke City.

Liverpool close on Poulsen

By James Dall - Sky Sports

Sky Sports News understands Liverpool are closing in on the signing of Juventus midfielder Christian Poulsen.

Juve are open to the sale of the Denmark international and a number of sides have been linked with an interest in his services.

Premier League duo Fulham and Everton are among those clubs said to be admirers of the 29-year-old.
