Cisse grabs Marseille winner
Marseille striker Djibril Cisse came off the bench to grab a
late winner against Nancy and send his side second in the
Ligue 1 standings.
The France international headed home in the 82nd minute to
add to the opener scored from the penalty spot by Mamadou
Niang six minutes earlier.
A Cisse shot deflected up off Hamel onto the arm of Sauget,
who was positioned on
the line.
The defender was harshly dismissed for deliberate handball
and Niang punished them further by dispatching the penalty
into the corner.
OM's lead lasted four minutes, Puygrenier heading a Kim
corner home at the near post to provide the Lorraine club
with an equaliser.
Cisse had the last laugh though, the on-loan Liverpool
striker nodding Mathieu Valbuena's left-wing cross in from
eight yards out to hand OM maximum points.

Reina fit
Pepe Reina has been passed fit for Sunday's game against
Charlton.
Reina picked up a shoulder injury during last Saturday's 1-0
defeat to Fulham but the goalkeeper has recovered and is
available for the final league game of the season against
Charlton on Sunday.
Although Reina is fit again Jerzy Dudek might get the nod as
Rafael Benitez will be wary about risking Reina ahead of the
European Cup final and the Charlton game will be Dudek's
last as a Liverpool player.

O'Donnell set for Crewe switch
Crewe have been given permission to speak to Liverpool
defender Danny O'Donnell about a permanent move to Gresty
Road.
The Alex have agreed a small fee with the Reds for the
21-year-old, who spent the season on loan with the club and
Dario Gradi is confident personal terms will not be a
problem.
He said: "We have been given permission to speak to Danny
and although he won't be a free transfer, we are confident
that he will come here. I would be very, very surprised if
he doesn't sign for us."

Contracts latest
Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher are edging ever closer to
new long-term Liverpool contracts.
Negotiations continued yesterday and there is a genuine
likelihood the pair may sign up over the next 72 hours.
There is caution about making such a prediction until the
final details of the contract are agreed, but it appears
only formalities now stand in the way of the scouse duo
putting pen to paper.
“I hope it may be done this week, but we are talking and
we’re sure it will be done soon,” confirmed Benitez.

Injury latest
Liverpool have fitness concerns over Pepe Reina and Momo
Sissoko ahead of the visit of Charlton this weekend.
Reina hasn’t trained because he’s nursing a shoulder injury,
while Sissoko is definitely out with a knee problem.
The African should be fit for the Champions League final.

Seedorf eyes Liverpool revenge
Milan midfielder Clarence Seedorf has admitted that he wants
revenge when he comes face to face with Liverpool in the
Champions League Final.
The two teams meet in the European Cup Final again this
month just two years after the English club overturned a 3-0
deficit to win the Istanbul showdown on penalties.
“We want to get our revenge against Liverpool, obviously
only in a sporting sense,” the Dutchman told the Spanish
newspaper AS.
“I cried that night in Turkey as it’s tough to lose the Cup
in just six minutes…
“It will be a difficult tie where I am sure physical
strength will make the difference. The key to the match will
be our ability to score more than them.
“We were impressive against Manchester United in the
semi-final. They are a great side, but we proved that we are
superior when it comes to strength, will and determination."

Reds linked with duo
Liverpool are being linked with a double swoop for Palermo's
Amauri and Real Zaragoza's Gabriel Milito.
The Reds have held a long-term interest in the pair and
reports suggest they could make a move for the duo in the
summer.
Liverpool chief Benitez is busy planning for next season and
he is set to be handed a substantial transfer kitty by
American owners to Tom Hicks and George Gillett to build a
team capable of challenging for the Premiership title.
Benitez is widely expected to bring in a new striker and
Palermo's Brazilian-born hit-man Amauri could be one of his
top targets.
Amauri's agent Mariano Grimaldi claims Benitez is a big
admirer of Amauri, but says they could face a fight for his
signature with a number of other clubs tracking him.

Benitez turns up the heat on Reds
Liverpool will head to Spain for a five-day training camp in
preparation for the Champions League final.
Rafa Benitez has shown he’s not been put off by the
controversy which followed the last ‘bonding session’ in
Portugal earlier this season.
That caused a furore when Craig Bellamy and John Arne Riise
clashed, but ultimately ended in triumph as it prepared the
players for victory over Barcelona.
Benitez said at the time the week away did far more good
than harm, which is why he’s given the go-ahead for another
trip before the players head for Athens.
He’s especially concerned the players should acclimatise to
potentially soaring temperatures in Greece on the evening of
May 23.
“We still have to finalise the details, but it’s likely
we’ll go away for five days to prepare after we play
Charlton,” said Benitez today.
Benitez has brushed off the golfing incident which made the
headlines prior to the trip to the Nou Camp.
He shrugged off any references to those events, saying: “I
know people will mention that again, but it’s not an issue.
We are thinking only about doing the right things to prepare
the players for the final.”

Cut-price Owen could be going
Michael Owen could be on his way out of Newcastle after it
emerged a £9million release clause will kick in at the end
of the season.
According to reports in Wednesday's newspapers, the England
striker's contract states that he can leave the club for a
cut-price transfer fee if the Tyneside club fail to qualify
for Europe.
The clause was included as part the deal which brought Owen
to St James' Park in a £16million move from Real Madrid in
August 2005 and will be activated by Newcastle's lowly
Premiership finish this season.
Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea are all thought to
be monitoring the situation and would be able to offer Owen
Champions League football and a more realistic chance of
winning silverware.

Benitez: Alonso still a key player
Xabi Alonso has been reassured he remains an integral part
of Rafael Benitez’s plans.
Alonso was surprisingly dropped to the bench for the
Champions League semi-final second leg victory over Chelsea
at Anfield last week.
While Alonso eventually played a part in helping Liverpool
seal a place in the Athens final against AC Milan by scoring
in the penalty shoot-out against Chelsea, a fit Momo Sissoko
didn’t even feature among the substitutes.
But Benitez reckons both midfielders accept the competition
for places and will play a part for Liverpool next season.
“I think Xabi understands,” said the Liverpool manager. “The
players they know me.
“They know I can change one or two players but that doesn't
mean I am disappointed with them.
“I was talking with Sissoko. The last two or three weeks he
has had more problems because Mascherano was playing well
and Gerrard was in the middle.
“I said to him it was not a problem because we will play 60
games next season and we need a lot of good players. We have
injuries also.
“All the players must be a little bit disappointed if they
don't play, but they need to have respect for their
team-mates. Xabi is a good professional and it is not a
problem.”

Ferguson backs Milan to beat Reds
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes
Liverpool have no chance of beating AC Milan in the
Champions League final on 23 May.
Milan beat United in the semi-finals to set up a repeat of
the 2005 final, which Liverpool won on penalties.
Ferguson told the Sun: "I'd bet for sure that Milan will win
the Champions League. I'm absolutely certain of it.
"I told their manager Carlo Ancelotti at the end of our
semi-final that there is no way he cannot win it now."
Ferguson plans to toast Milan's victory with a bottle of
wine given to him by Ancelotti after his side had lost in
Italy.
"Carlo gave me a magnificent bottle of wine," Ferguson
added. "But I immediately told him I would only drink his
wine once I see him lifting the Champions Cup."

FA charges Brown after headbutt
Fulham midfielder Michael Brown has been charged with
violent conduct after headbutting Liverpool's Xabi Alonso.
The 30-year-old clashed with Alonso in the first-half of
Fulham's 1-0 win on Saturday, leaving the Spaniard with a
bloody nose.
Brown has until 1800 GMT on Wednesday to answer the charge
and his case will be heard by the FA's disciplinary
commission on Thursday.
The charge carries an automatic three-match ban.
That would mean Brown missing Sunday's match at
Middlesbrough along with the first two games of next season.
The referee and his fellow officials did not see the
incident, which left Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez
seething.
"It was clear and everybody saw it," said Benitez.

Gonzalez pleased to be a Red
Mark Gonzalez says he is pleased to be a Liverpool player as
the Reds look to the European Cup final.
Gonzalez has struggled at times during his first season in
English football but the Chilean international says he is
glad to be a Red and the moment when Liverpool beat Chelsea
to book their place in Athens was the best moment of his
career.
"I'm very happy with Liverpool's win over Chelsea, because
it allowed us to reach the final. Even though I did not
play, I'm proud of having being chosen to be on the bench. I
have never experienced anything like it in my life. To reach
this final is like winning a championship," said the winger.
"I have no doubt this is the happiest moment of my career.
"I'm satisfied because to be at Liverpool is not easy. This
is my first year here in England and I have got used to a
completely different football."

LFC plea for more final tickets falls on
deaf UEFA ears
Liverpool have been told they will not get any more tickets
for the Champions League Final in Athens, despite rivals AC
Milan saying they intend to return some unsold.
The Anfield club has been allocated just 17,000 tickets for
the 63,000-capacity game on May 23.
The only fans guaranteed tickets are those who have attended
seven Champions League games this season, excluding the
qualifier against Macabi Haifa.
With only six other home games, supporters must have
attended an away game to be guaranteed final tickets.
The rest will be divided up between season ticket holders,
fan-card holders and member of the Auto Cup scheme who have
six Champions League game attendances either home or away.
LFC chief executive Rick Parry said yesterday: “In an ideal
world we'd have been allocated more tickets for Athens and
we spent all day with Uefa on Friday asking the question.
“There is a suggestion that Milan will be returning some of
their tickets and so we asked whether we could have them,
but the answer was a clear no. Those tickets will go back
into the big pot."

Finnan: Reds set on third-placed finish
Steve Finnan insists Liverpool are still determined to
finish third in the Premiership despite fielding weakened
sides in their last two games.
Liverpool now face already-relegated Charlton on Sunday in
their final league match, while Arsenal are at Portsmouth,
and if the Anfield side match the Gunners' result then they
will be certain of third spot.
"There is still a lot to play for and we want to finish as
high as we can," said Finnan. "I know the team has changed
quite a bit in the last couple of league games but the teams
which have been put out should have been good enough."

Zanetti to support Liverpool
Inter captain Javier Zanetti has admitted that it won’t be
easy for him to cheer on Milan in the Champions League Final
against Liverpool.
“I have many friends on both sides,” said the Argentine. “I
know Javier Mascherano, Clarence Seedorf, Leandro Grimi and
it will be a difficult match – just like the one two years
ago.
“I will watch the game on television, like any other
sportsman, but it will be really hard for me to cheer for
Milan…”

Benitez hailing 'fantastic' Zenden
Rafael Benitez has hailed surprise Champions League hero
Bolo Zenden – but refused to be drawn on the Dutchman’s
future at Liverpool.
The former Holland international starred in both legs of the
semi-final victory over Chelsea and slotted home the first
penalty of the dramatic shoot-out that earned a final date
with AC Milan in Athens on May 23.
Although having made just eight Premiership starts this
season, the 30-year-old has began six and been substitute in
four of Liverpool’s 14 Champions League fixtures.
But despite playing an important part in the run to Athens,
Zenden has rarely enjoyed plaudits from the Anfield crowd.
“It’s not easy when you talk about Bolo because some people
don’t know how good he is, as a professional and as a
player,” said the Liverpool manager. “His mentality is very
competitive, he is always a fantastic team-mate.
“One manager that he had said he was the glue because he is
always between the players and trying to keep them together.
The young players, the new players, the English players, the
Spanish players, because he talks a lot of languages.
“I think that is a very good definition. He is a fantastic
team-mate, fantastic professional and a good player.”

Finnan: Fight is on for final place
Steve Finnan says the build-up to the Champions League final
started against Fulham, with his Liverpool team-mates out to
impress Rafa Benitez.
Benitez rang the changes for the 1-0 defeat at Craven
Cottage in order to give his big guns a rest after their
semi-final heroics, giving some of his fringe players a
chance to stake their claim in the process.
The Reds have just one match left of the Premiership
campaign - against Charlton on Sunday - and Finnan knows
time is running out for players to stake their claim.
"There's no doubt we're already thinking about the final.
It's a great competition and the build up has already
started," he said.
"But we've got to keep training and playing hard. It'll come
around quickly and will be a great occasion.
"People are putting in the extra inch in training to impress
the manager.
"Obviously we've got a big squad so a few people are going
to be disappointed.
"Training has really stepped up. The game against Charlton
will be the last opportunity to impress even more."

Gradi praises Liverpool's Parry
Crewe manager Dario Gradi has praised Liverpool chief
executive Rick Parry over his handling of the negotiations
over Danny O'Donnell.
Gradi is keen to bring 21-year-old Reds defender Danny
O'Donnell, who has spent the season on loan with the Alex,
to Gresty Road on a permanent basis.
Gradi said: "I spoke to him (Parry) last week about Danny
coming here and again he was as helpful as ever. You can
imagine the kind of week he was having after playing a
Champions League semi-final but he was there again willing
to try and do something.
"There may be some money involved with Danny coming here but
we don't mind that. I would happily agree to a sell on
clause because we would like Danny to come here and develop
into a really good player."

Boss: Harry has final chance
Rafa Benitez believes Harry Kewell may be able to take part
in the Champions League final in Athens later this month.
The winger, who has been out since last summer's World Cup,
made his comeback as a substitute against Fulham on
Saturday.
With just one fixture to play before the final on May 23,
time is short for the Australian to get fully match fit.
But Benitez insists there is a chance: "It was positive to
see Harry again. Maybe he will have a chance for the final.
We will have time for testing him.
"We need to test him because right now you could say
physically that he is fit but really you need to play, you
need to tackle, and to sprint."
(LFC Official Website)
Finnan: Kewell return a timely boost
Steve Finnan believes the return of Kewell has given the
Reds a timely boost ahead of their date with AC Milan.
"I don't know whether Harry expected to play again this
season but it is good that he came on and managed to get
some minutes," he said. "It's great because he's been out a
long time, so it is like having a new player. He might play
his part in the final.
"It has been a difficult season for him with operations, so
I just think he has been trying
to recover.
"Probably the main objective for him is to get ready for
pre-season and if he can play a few games then all well and
good.
"He gives us a balance on the left-hand side and gives us
competition. He can also play on the right and up front."

Jewell blasts Reds rotation
Wigan boss Paul Jewell has hit out at Liverpool for fielding
an under-strength side
against Fulham.
Fulham boosted their survival hopes with a 1-0 win over the
UEFA Champions League finalists on Saturday.
Reds boss Rafa Benitez made nine changes to his side for the
game at Craven Cottage and the decision left Jewell seething
as Fulham climbed further clear of his own Wigan side in the
battle to avoid relegation
"What happens to Wigan is of no concern to Liverpool, but
for the good of the game, its integrity, resting nine
players can't be right," Jewell told The Sun.
"What if Sheffield United had won at Aston Villa and decided
to play a reserve team against us next week? It's the same
scenario.
"If Neil Warnock announced he was going to rest nine
regulars there would be absolute murder.
"We are not down in this position because of Fulham or
because of the situation at West Ham or because Liverpool
have rested nine players, but events have conspired
against us."

Brown incident set for TV review
The FA is to review TV evidence of an incident between
Fulham's Michael Brown and Liverpool's Xabi Alonso on
Saturday.
Brown appeared to aim a headbutt at the Spanish midfielder
in the first half which left Alonso with a bloody nose.
The referee, Steve Bennett, had turned away from the players
to follow the path of the ball and missed the incident, but
TV cameras caught it and the tapes will be reviewed by an FA
panel on Thursday.
Brown has been involved in at least two ugly challenges
already this season with late tackles on Ryan Giggs and
Ashley Cole that looked dangerous.

LFC owner will fly ‘whole Hicks clan’ to
Athens
Liverpool owner Tom Hicks is planning to fly eight members
of his family to Athens when the team take on AC Milan for
the Champions League final.
American sports moguls George Gillett and Tom Hicks took
control of the club in a £470m deal earlier this year.
Already they have shown fans their commitment to the club’s
future, with ambitious plans for a new stadium, and said
they wanted manager Rafa Benitez to stay with the club “for
a long time”.
Mr Hicks said: “The whole Hicks clan, the eight of us, will
be in Athens.
“My 15-year-old son is in the middle of his school finals so
he will have to get some dispensation to be there.”
He said he can hardly wait to see his team take on AC Milan
– and is preparing for the event by watching the 2005 match
from Istanbul again.
