Kuyt influential in Dutch win
Euro 2008 finally came to life on Monday night, with Holland
destroying current World Champions Italy 3-0 - and
Liverpool’s Dirk Kuyt was influential in the victory,
assisting two goals.
Kuyt became the first Liverpool player in action during this
European Championship, starting in his new position of right
side of an attacking three behind one forward. Typically
Kuyt worked tirelessly for the team both defensively and
going forward.

Alonso keeping quiet on future
Xabi Alonso is not prepared to talk about his future until
Spain's involvement at Euro 2008 is over.
The Liverpool midfielder has been strongly linked with a
summer move to Serie A giants Juventus, but is refusing to
speculate on the rumours.
He has been at Anfield since the summer of 2004 but has
found his first-team opportunities restricted by the arrival
of Javier Mascherano, and the emergence of young Brazilian
Lucas.
With Aston Villa skipper Gareth Barry another potential
arrival this summer he could yet find himself even further
down the pecking order.
However, despite previously admitting his pride at being
linked with such a prestigious club, Alonso has made it
clear that he is not prepared to discuss the Juventus
situation.
"I know there is interest ," he told El Mundo Deportivo.
"But right now I not going to talk about that because there
is enough to think about here with the national team."

Stevie to learn England decision in August
Steven Gerrard will have to wait until August before
discovering if he's won the race to be Fabio Capello's
England skipper.
The national coach has used five captains during his tenure
in charge so far, with Gerrard, John Terry, Rio Ferdinand,
David Beckham and Gareth Barry all wearing the armband.
But Capello insists he will wait a few more weeks before
deciding who will lead England into the 2010 World Cup
qualifying campaign.
"I will decide in the last week before we play Czech
Republic - I have not decided yet," he said.

Torres: Reds must spend for success
Fernando Torres has told Liverpool's co-owners they must
splash the cash this summer to give the team any chance of
winning the Premier League
The Reds have not sampled league success since 1990 and
Torres believes the only way to change that is to spend big
money on top quality players the way Manchester United and
Chelsea regularly do.
Liverpool - who recently announced a £33million loss in the
financial year ending 31st July 2007 - have already spent on
Udinese full-back Andreas Dossena, but Torres is hopeful the
Italian's arrival will be the first of many.
"It's clear that they (United and Chelsea) have a lot of
£20million or £25m players, and that difference is what
separates us in the table," Torres told the Liverpool Echo.
"I hope that the club does what needs to be done and we can
quickly catch them up.
"In order to compete with Manchester United and Chelsea, if
we can't keep up with them economically, then we have to get
it absolutely right in
the transfer market."

Anfield accounts show £33m loss
Liverpool posted a £33m loss in the year ending July 31,
2007 - according to accounts submitted to Companies House.
And the outlook for the financial future at Anfield is not
likely to improve, piling even more pressure on the Reds’
co-owners Tom Hicks and
George Gillett.
The first accounts submitted by Kop Football Holdings Ltd,
one of Liverpool’s parent companies, revealed the loss.
The club’s £350 million loans will also have to be
refinanced as early as January and the club must pay
interest on a £64 million loan from Kop Football Ltd, its
immediate parent company.
The accounts also reveal that the owners wrote off £10.3
million when they scrapped the club’s design for a new
stadium after their takeover in February 2007 – and that the
co-owners claimed more than £1.4 million in personal
expenses in the seven months after their takeover.
While the figures make bleak reading, it is understood the
loss will not affect Rafa Benitez’s spending power this
summer.
A significant transfer fund for the manager was included in
the club’s overall level of debt, allowing Benitez to still
chase his major targets.

Liverpool linked to
Valencia's Villa and Silva
Liverpool have been put on alert after Valencia revealed the
club will listen to “serious” offers for David Villa and
David Silva.
Spain striker Villa has been linked to a host of top clubs
across Europe, including the Reds, while midfielder Silva is
also being monitored by
a host to English sides.
An exodus of Valencia’s top players has been predicted as
the club look to solve some of the financial trouble caused
by the sizeable pay-off
to sacked coach Ronald Koeman and problems with the
construction of
a new stadium.
