Rafa to appeal dismissals
Rafael Benitez will appeal against both red cards after
nine-man Liverpool slumped to a 3-1 defeat at Fulham.
Philipp Degen and Jamie Carragher were sent off for
second-half fouls as Liverpool's Premier League hopes
disintegrated, falling to their fifth league loss of the
season.
Benitez said: "The first one was a yellow card. The second
you can clearly see Carragher was kicking the ball."

Hodgson 'preaching modesty'
Fulham manager Roy Hodgson is 'preaching modesty and
humility' following Saturday's victory over Liverpool at
Craven Cottage.
Erik Nevland and Clint Dempsey secured the win for the
Cottagers after Bobby Zamora's opener had been cancelled out
by Fernando Torres.
Liverpool's demise on the banks of The Thames has grabbed
the headlines, with the Reds suffering their sixth defeat in
seven games
in all competitions.
Hodgson, though, does not want Fulham to get carried away
with the success over one of the perceived heavyweights in
the Premier League.
He said: "We still have got a lot of work to do. I am
preaching modesty and humility.
"To be in the Premier League and to be playing Liverpool and
Manchester United and Chelsea is a wonderful achievement for
Fulham."

Rafa explains Fernando decision
Rafa Benitez defended his decision to substitute Fernando
Torres in the second half of the 3-1 defeat to Fulham and
claimed he was protecting his star striker.
El Nino scored a brilliant equaliser on the stroke of
half-time but was replaced after 63 minutes with the scores
level at 1-1.
"We decided to play Fernando against United which was a
difficult decision because he wasn't 100 per cent fit," the
boss told his post-match press conference.
"After this game he needed four days to be ready again but
he still isn't 100 per cent fit, so we had to decide if he
could start today or use him for part of the second half. We
decided to start with him but I have to protect the player."

Rafa's tactics torn to shreds
Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez is set to face renewed
speculation regarding the security of his job after his
much-changed side lost 3-1 against Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Fulham took the points as goals from Erik Nevland and Clint
Dempsey secured the win after Fernando Torres had cancelled
out Bobby Zamora's opener in the first half on the banks of
The Thames.
However, Benitez will receive the intense scrutiny after
deciding to substitute Torres as an injury precaution early
in the second half with the score at 1-1 before then
withdrawing the influential Yossi Benayoun after Liverpool
had again fallen behind.
To make matters worse for Liverpool, who have lost six of
their last seven games in all competitions and travel to
Lyon for a must-win UEFA Champions League game in midweek,
Philipp Degen and Jamie Carragher were shown red cards in
the closing stages.

while Philipp Degen makes his first ever Barclays Premier
League start in defence.

Benayoun, Mascherano, Lucas, Voronin, Torres.

Young guns suffer mini derby misery
Liverpool under-18s were left disappointed after an Everton
late show condemned them to a 2-0 defeat in the mini derby
on Saturday afternoon.
The Reds struggled to recapture the attacking potency that
saw them destroy leaders Blackburn last time out and went
down to goals from Danny Murphy and Conor McAleny.
Liverpool under-18s: Chris Oldfield, John Flanagan, Marcus
Giglio, Stephen Sama, Matty McGiveron, Craig Roddan, Andre
Wisdom, Michael Roberts, James Ellison (Michael Ngoo 84),

FRIDAY 30 |
Benitez fears for Gerrard fitness
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has revealed he does not
know when captain Steven Gerrard will be able to return to
first-team action.
Gerrard, 29, has missed two games with a groin injury, and
Benitez has not ruled out the possibility of surgery.
"Gerrard is improving but the next week will be crucial in
terms of what we will do with him," said Benitez.
"His progress is slow, we will have to decide what to do if
he is doesn't progress as quickly as we would hope."
Gerrard picked up the injury while on England duty earlier
this month and had to be taken off in the first half of
Liverpool's Champions League game against Lyon on 20
October.
He is definitely out of Liverpool's Premier League match
against Fulham on Saturday and is a major doubt for their
return trip to Lyon next week.

Johnson joins Gerrard on sidelines,
Aquilani unwell with virus
Liverpool’s injury problems lingered on as the Reds prepared
to head south for the Fulham game tomorrow. Steven Gerrard
was already expected to miss tomorrow’s game with the groin
injury he first sustained when on England duty, he’s also
been joined by Glen Johnson. And after making his debut in
midweek Alberto Aquilani might now be sidelined thanks to a
virus.

Kuyt: Squad vital
for Reds success
Dirk Kuyt warns Liverpool will need to call on their entire
squad in search of success in the crunch games which are set
to shape the rest
of their season.
Kuyt captained a much-changed Liverpool side at the Emirates
Stadium on Wednesday when they lost 2-1 to Arsenal in the
Carling Cup.
Liverpool were without Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher,
Fernando Torres and Jose Reina in north London - but all are
expected to return on Saturday for a Barclays Premier League
match at Fulham before next week's must-win Champions League
trip to Lyon.
Matches at Birmingham and then against Manchester City and
Everton follow in the first half of next month - and Kuyt
knows the Reds need everyone in or close to top form.
"We are ready for a big week, and a big few weeks," said the
Dutchman.

Fulham skipper Murphy
impressed by Liverpool
Fulham skipper Danny Murphy was impressed by former club
Liverpool's victory on Sunday against Manchester United.
Murphy's Cottagers face Liverpool tomorrow.
Murphy, who spent seven years at Anfield, will miss the
clash because of a knee problem and said: "Liverpool tend to
pull out big performances when the chips are down and it was
a fantastic effort to beat a strong Manchester United team
on Sunday.
"It may well be the confidence-booster they need to string a
run of results together and start applying pressure to the
other sides at the top
of the table."

Mascherano forgets Barca link
Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano has denied
suggestions his form has been affected by transfer rumours
linking him with Barcelona.
Mascherano was linked with a move to the Nou Camp in the
summer with Pep Guardiola a big admirer of the player.
The Argentina international concedes he has not been at the
top of his game so far this season, but he is adamant it has
nothing to do with rumours over his future.
"Everyone knows Barcelona were interested in me but that's
in the past now," said Mascherano.
"Liverpool said no and that's the end of it. Some might say
I haven't been playing well because Barcelona tried to buy
me.
"I agree I haven't been at my best but it's not because of
that. I just haven't started the season well."

Reserves win on pens
Liverpool reserves are through to the quarter finals of the
Lancashire Senior Cup.
John McMahon's side booked their place in the last eight
with a penalty shoot-out win over Man Utd last night. The
game had finished 1-1 after 90 minutes with Nathan
Ecclestone scoring for the Reds.
After the 90 minutes, the game went straight into the
penalty shoot-out with goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis the hero for
Liverpool with two saves. Steve Irwin, Daniel Ayala, Chris
Mavinga and Ecclestone scored from the spot for the Reds.

THURSDAY 29 |
Midfielder in Liverpool fitness race
Fulham boss Roy Hodgson is hoping to welcome midfielder
Simon Davies back to his squad for this weekend's game
against Liverpool.
Davies has not played for the last five weeks after
struggling to recover from a foot injury and last played in
the Carling Cup defeat against Manchester City on September
23.
It was hoped that the Welsh midfielder might have been
available for last weekend's clash against City but that
game came too soon but Hodgson is keeping his fingers
crossed he will be passed fit for the Liverpool clash as
Fulham bid to extend their unbeaten run to five matches.
Striker Andy Johnson is still doubtful with a long-term
shoulder problem while Danny Murphy is sidelined by a knee
injury and Kagisho Dikagcoi
is banned.

Mata waits on new deal
Juan Mata's father and agent wants Valencia to up their
contract offer, amid claims that Liverpool are ready to make
a move for the forward.
The Spain international is in talks with Los Che over a new
contract and only last week his father, Juan Mata senior,
stated that a deal was close.
But now it appears things have not moved on as expected and
Mata could be forced to seek a move if the club do not match
his expectations.

Insua: Debut strike will spur me on
Emiliano Insua admitted he was delighted to net his first
ever goal in a red shirt but was left frustrated after
Liverpool fell to defeat against Arsenal at the Emirates
Stadium.
The Reds No.22 scored a superb first goal for the club to
cancel out Fran Merida's stunning opener but Arsene Wenger's
young side sealed a place in the Carling Cup quarter-final
when Nicklas Bendtner netted a second half winner.
"I'm really happy to have scored my first goal for the club
but disappointed to have lost the game because I thought we
played well," Insua told Liverpoolfc.tv.

Kuyt hails Liverpool FC
new boy Alberto Aquilani
Dirk Kuyt today reflected on a bittersweet first experience
as Liverpool captain – as he hailed the launch of Alberto
Aquilani’s English career.
With Steven Gerrard injured and Jamie Carragher rested, Kuyt
took charge of the skipper’s armband for last night’s
Carling Cup fourth round clash at Arsenal.
But despite his best efforts, the Dutchman was powerless to
prevent the Reds slipping to their fifth defeat in six
matches, this time a 2-1 reverse at the Emirates.
Kuyt is loathe to put any pressure on Aquilani’s shoulders
but he is optimistic that the Italian midfielder – who
played one glorious pass to Philipp Degen – will prove to be
a hit.

Injury update
Fernando Torres should be fit for Saturday.
Rafael Benitez only decided on the coach to the ground to
play Fernando Torres against Man Utd on Sunday and didn't
risk him at all against Arsenal last night. However, the
striker is progressing well and will be able to face Fulham
this weekend. Steven Gerrard may miss out
again however.
"I think Torres could be okay. Gerrard is working with the
physios so we will see," said Benitez.
"Today we had a few more problems, but these two players
will need time. Hopefully Torres will be okay.
"Gerrard is maybe more difficult for Fulham."

Wenger delighted
by Merida showing
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has hailed the impact of Fran
Merida in Wednesday night's 2-1 Carling Cup win over
Liverpool at
Emirates Stadium.
The 19-year-old former Barcelona trainee returned from the
Under-20 World Cup with Spain to drill in a fine first-half
strike as Wenger's faith in youth was once again justified.
"Fran is a quality player," said Wenger, who decided against
allowing the youngster to go out to Levante on loan.
Wenger added: "Fran came to us at a very young age, but our
school is in line with the way he was educated.
"He suits perfectly the way we want to play football."

Reina to be offered
new long term deal
Pepe Reina will be offered the chance to extend his Anfield
career as Liverpool aim to tie up the long-term future of
another key
first-team regular.
Club officials will sit down with Reina in January to begin
negotiations over a lucrative new contract.
The 27-year-old only signed a five-year deal in June 2007
but Liverpool are keen to stave off any interest from
potential suitors, with Barcelona known to be tracking the
Spain international.
Reina’s new deal would represent the next big outlay for
Liverpool, who this year have already agreed long-term
contracts with Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard, Daniel
Agger, Dirk Kuyt as well as manager
Rafael Benitez.
The Spaniard has the record for the fewest number of goals
conceded by a keeper in their first fifty games at
Liverpool, as well as taking the least amount of games to
register 50 and 100 clean sheets.

WEDNESDAY 28 |
Stuttgart boss Markus Babbel facing the
axe
Former Liverpool star Markus Babbel is heading for the sack
at Stuttgart.
Their 1-0 Cup defeat at second division Greuther Fuerth was
their fifth on the trot. Stuttgart, one of the pre-season
Bundesliga favourites, are 14th after a string of poor
displays.
Babbel, in his first full season in charge and still
studying for his coaching licence, said: “This is a very
difficult situation and is not getting easier.”

Rafa focuses on positives
Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez says there are many positives
to take out of the defeat by Arsenal.
The Reds went down 2-1 to Arsenal's young guns at the
Emirates Stadium in a match that created a number of chances
with flowing football played by both teams.
Benitez was happy with the performance of his team, with a
number of first-team players left out of the starting
line-up, and praised both teams' style of play.
"We have to be disappointed because we have lost but we have
also shown some quality and I think it was a good game with
chances for both teams," he told Sky Sports.
"Both teams were attacking, they were creating chances, and
that is good for the fans. But I'm disappointed for us
because we have lost."
(Sky Sports)
Young guns see off Liverpool
A second-half goal from Nicklas Bendtner was enough for
Arsenal as they beat Liverpool 2-1 in an entertaining game
at the Emirates.
The Gunners progress into the quarter-finals of the Carling
Cup but credit should also be given to Liverpool who battled
throughout and played some good football for periods of the
game.
A great strike from Spanish youngster Fran Merida opened the
scoring for Arsenal on 19 minutes - the midfielder let fly
from the right edge of the penalty area and the ball flew
past the helpless Diego Cavalieri and in off the post.
Not to be outdone, Liverpool responded with an equally
sublime goal when Emiliano Insua hit a dipping shot on the
half volley from way out which flew over Lukasz Fabianski
and into the net.
It was Bendtner who sealed the win though, the Danish
striker capping a fine sweeping move from the Gunners to
turn well and surge into the box before slamming the ball
into the roof of the net five minutes after
the break.

Kuyt captains Reds
Dirk Kuyt captains Liverpool tonight.
Kuyt wears the captain's armband for the first time in a
competitive match as Rafael Benitez rings in the changes for
tonight's Carling Cup game at Arsenal. Kuyt and Emiliano
Insua are the only players who started against Man Utd on
Sunday to start here.
Reserve pairing Damien Plessis and Jay Spearing both start
in the centre of midfield while Stephen Darby and Nathan
Ecclestone both make
the bench.
The squad in full is as follows: Cavalieri, Degen, Insua,
Skrtel, Kyrgiakos, Plessis, Spearing, Babel, Kuyt, Voronin,
Ngog.
Subs: Reina, Aquilani, Benayoun, Darby, Dossena, Eccleston,
Ayala.

Midfielder signs new deal
Damien Plessis has signed an extension to his current
Liverpool contract that will keep him at Anfield until 2012.
The 21-year-old midfielder has been named as an unused
substitute for the Reds on four occasions so far this
season, and has made a total of seven appearances for the
senior side since his arrival from Lyon
in August 2007.
Plessis is a regular in John McMahon's reserve team squad
and is also a French under-21 international.

Benitez: Reds are on a high
Rafael Benitez hopes Liverpool can retain the feel-good
factor that has changed the whole atmosphere at the club
following Sunday's triumph over champions Manchester United.
But the Liverpool manager confirms he will make several
changes for Wednesday night's Carling Cup fourth-round tie
at Arsenal, with Alberto Aquilani set for his debut
following his £20million move from Roma
in the summer.
Steven Gerrard is still out, while Javier Mascherano is
serving a one-match suspension.
But Benitez will have Aquilani available - probably as a
second-half substitute - while defenders Andreas Dossena and
Sotirios Kyrgiakos have recovered from injuries and are in
the squad.

Martinez denies Fergie attack
Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has 'categorically denied'
that he claimed Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson had
too much power.
Comments attributed to the Spaniard appeared in a newspaper
in his homeland in which he suggested that the Football
Association were afraid to punish the Red Devils boss.
Martinez was also reported to have claimed that Ferguson had
other Premier League managers - including Sam Allardyce and
Steve Bruce - on his side in his battles with Liverpool boss
Rafa Benitez.
But the Wigan boss insists he never made any comments about
Ferguson and released a statement through the League
Managers' Association.
The statement read: "Wigan Athletic manager, Roberto
Martinez, has today categorically denied making the comments
about Sir Alex Ferguson that have been attributed to him in
a number of media reports.
"Martinez has referred the matter to the League Managers
Association."
Ferguson found himself in hot water with the FA over his
criticism of referee Alan Wiley's fitness in the wake of the
home draw with Sunderland earlier this month.
The Old Trafford supremo has admitted to the charge of
improper conduct and has asked for a personal hearing.
