Rafa: We could have scored five
Rafael Benitez praised his team's performance during the 1-0
win over West Bromwich Albion and felt Liverpool could
easily have scored at least five goals but for Baggies
keeper Tomasz Kuszczak.
"For me the West Brom keeper was the man of the match and
that was probably one of the best games of his life, he was
amazing," Benitez said.
"We did all the things for winning and at times it was
almost impossible to score. Scoring one goal is not enough
but we created enough chances to have won by at least
five goals."

Perfect ten for Reds
Liverpool made it ten wins in a row with a deserved 1-0 win
over battling West Brom
at Anfield.
Peter Crouch's second half goal proved to be enough to give
Liverpool the points and maintain their remarkable run of
form.
Only an inspired performance from Tomasz Kuszczak prevented
West Brom from suffering a mauling as Liverpool moved into
the New Year with optimisim high at Anfield.

Kromkamp agrees terms
Liverpool have confirmed that they expect to sign Dutch
international full-back Jan Kromkamp from Villarreal in a
swap deal involving Josemi next week after the player agreed
personal terms with the club.
All that remains is for Josemi to iron out a contract with
the Spanish club and the transfer should then be finalised
next week.
Clubs spokesperson Ian Cotton confirmed on Liverpoolfc.tv:
"In principle we have reached an agreement and hope the
transfer can be concluded next week."

Cisse bored with Marseille speculation
Liverpool forward Djibril Cisse has pledged to stay at
Anfield despite reports he will sign for Marseille in the
January transfer window.
"I just want to make myself clear. I am in Liverpool and I'm
going to stay in Liverpool," the former Auxerre player told
Sky Sports.
"I don't want to leave after two seasons. I don't know why
I'm going to leave.
"The Liverpool fans are amazing, the club is amazing. We
have a good team, a good manager and everything is okay. I
don't know why I'm going to leave."
Cisse, who has scored 12 goals in 28 appearances for
Liverpool this season, including in the 3-1 defeat of
Everton on Wednesday, has been linked with a move to French
club Marseille for months, but insists he has no intention
of returning home.
"I'm really fed up with all this speculation about me," he
said. "I'm going to move to Marseille, it's always
Marseille, and it starts to be boring."

Rafa: Cisse is not for sale
Rafael Benitez has quashed the latest press speculation
linking Djibril Cisse with a January move away from Anfield
by insisting the French striker is very much part of his
plans.
Benitez laughed off morning reports that Cisse is on his way
to Marseille and went on to explain that he's very happy
with the form of the striker who netted Liverpool's final
goal in the derby win over Everton on Wednesday.
"They (Marseille) are always talking but they don't talk
with us," said the Reds boss. "There is no news and we don't
want to sell Djib.
"He is a very important player for us who has shown the kind
of attitude I like in players. He's a good finisher and
against Everton I knew his pace would give us options."

Rafa lifts lid on swap deal
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez revealed language problems
have prompted him to swap Spanish full-back Josemi for
Holland defender Jan Kromkamp.
Benitez confirmed he has reached an agreement with
Villarreal over the swap deal, which is expected to go ahead
after the holiday programme.
And it is the problems both players have had in learning a
new language which has prompted the transfer.
"Josemi is a right-back with some problems here with
English, and Kromkamp has problems with Spanish at his new
club.
"Maybe this swap will be good for both of them. Josemi is
happy here, he's a good professional, but he sometimes
prefers to talk in Spanish and to do that when he is with
the Spanish players here.
"Kromkamp has the same problem at Villarreal with the
Spanish language. We still need to talk to both players, but
in a few days maybe he will be here training with us.
"He is a strong full-back, aggressive and offensive. He can
play as a full-back or a wing-back, but I would rather now
wait to make sure the deal can be completed."
The Spanish boss conceded he is still searching for a
centre-back to strengthen his squad.
"I still need to strengthen in the centre of defence, we
have four or five options we are considering."

Morientes out of next two games
Fernando Morientes has been ruled out of Liverpool's next
two games after sustaining a knee injury in the midweek
derby win over Everton.
Manager Rafael Benitez today revealed that he must make do
without the services of his Spanish striker for Saturday's
home match with West Bromwich Albion and Monday's visit to
Bolton.
He hopes to have him back fit early next week and reported
no other injury problems at a Melwood press conference on
Friday morning.

Gerrard targets 20 goals
Steven Gerrard is dreaming of reaching the 20-goal mark in
what is already the best goalscoring season of his career to
date.
His strike in the Merseyside derby win over Everton on
Wednesday took his haul for the campaign to 14 goals in 28
matches, and now he has his sights trained on West Brom, who
visit Anfield on Saturday for the final game of 2005.
"By the end of the Premiership season I would like to be
comfortably up there in double figures and get as close to
20 this season as I can. It's a personal target now," he
said.
"I have been very happy with my form this season since day
one. The important thing is that I have remained injury
free, touch wood, this season.
"When I do that I am able to train hard and regularly and
that is when I get the best
out of myself."

Reds to gain Kromkamp for Josemi
Dutch international Jan Kromkamp is set to join Liverpool
from Villareal in an exchange deal which will see right-back
Josemi move in the opposite direction.
The 25-year-old Dutchman, who can play in midfield or
defence, will tie up the deal if he agrees personal terms.
Villareal said in a statement: "We have reached an agreement
with Liverpool for the transfer of Jan Kromkamp and the
arrival of Josemi.
"The agreement is between the clubs and must be agreed by
both players."
Villarreal have not announced whether the deal will be a
straight swap or whether a fee will also be involved.
Kromkamp is not a regular at Villareal and has only made six
appearances for the senior side this season.
The former AZ Alkmaar player made his international debut
against Sweden in August 2004 and has since won eight caps
under coach Marco van Basten.

Bowyer loses red card appeal
Newcastle midfielder Lee Bowyer has lost his appeal against
his sending-off at Liverpool on Boxing Day and will now
serve a three-match ban.
The 28-year-old received a straight red card from referee
Mark Halsey for serious foul play for a challenge on Xabi
Alonso, and although he launched an appeal which would have
made him available for Wednesday night's postponed
Premiership clash with former club Charlton, his case was
rejected on Thursday.
"Lee Bowyer's claim for wrongful dismissal was rejected at a
disciplinary commission hearing on Thursday," said a
statement on the FA's official website.
"He will therefore serve a three-match suspension with
immediate effect."
The ban could effectively signal the end of his spell on
Tyneside with Birmingham and Charlton monitoring his
situation after it became clear that he sees his future
elsewhere.
Bowyer's red card at Anfield was the fourth of his Newcastle
career, which began during the summer of 2003 when he made a
free transfer move from West Ham.

Allardyce anxious to avoid fixture
congestion
Bolton manager Sam Allardyce is keen for the club to sort
out the undersoil heating problems at the Reebok Stadium
ahead of the match against Liverpool on Monday.
With severe bad weather forecast, Allardyce fears a fixture
pile-up if the matter is not resolved in the next few days.
The home match against Middlesbrough will have to be
re-arranged after it was postponed last night because of a
fault in the heating system.
Bolton also have an away game with Birmingham to fit in as
that fixture was called off because of fog.
Allardyce said: “We have to make sure the pitch is ready for
the Liverpool game as we cannot afford to have any more
games postponed.
“The load is becoming greater after the Middlesbrough match
was called off.
“We were all extremely frustrated and disappointed that
happened. It was a nightmare.”

Derby goal one of my sweetest
Peter Crouch described last night's debut derby strike as
one of the sweetest moments of his career - and then vowed
Liverpool will push Chelsea all the way in the race for the
title.
"I think that's my sweetest goal of all," said Crouch. "We
all know what this game means to the supporters in this part
of the world, so for me to get the first goal gave me a
great buzz because I know it was crucial.
"My confidence is really high and that's natural when you're
in the goals. When my chance came I had no hesitation
putting it away."

Liverpool closing in on Brazilian ace
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez and his chief executive Rick
Parry are trying to negotiate a deal that would see
Brazilian defender Daniel Alves make the switch to Anfield.
The player's club Sevilla are keen to sign Liverpool
defender Josemi so Rafa is trying his luck with regards
their highly rated 22-year-old and we understand that a bid
of £7million plus Josemi has already been rejected.

Carra rues rare goal against Reds
Jamie Carragher admitted a failure to keep a ninth
successive league clean sheet took the shine off Liverpool's
derby success at Everton tonight.
Peter Crouch, Steven Gerrard and Djibril Cisse got the goals
which gave Rafael Benitez's men victory in the 202nd
Merseyside derby.
But James Beattie netted for Everton just before half-time
in a 3-1 win for the Reds - the first goal they have
conceded in nine Barclays Premiership matches.
And Carragher told Sky Sports afterwards: "It's
disappointing to concede just before half-time - we were
expecting a battle in the second half but the third goal (by
Cisse) killed the game.
"We are disappointed to concede because the aim before the
game was to keep a clean sheet and we haven't done it."

Rafa: We can play a lot better
Rafael Benitez declared himself very happy with Liverpool's
Merseyside derby victory over Everton but admitted his team
can play a lot better.
Benitez said the 3-1 win over Everton was not Liverpool's
best performance of the season but added that confidence is
high in his team.
Benitez said: "I am very happy but at times in the first
half Everton caused us problems in the air and we were not
winning second balls. We can play a lot better and have
played better this season."

Liverpool storm to win at Everton
Liverpool cruised to their ninth successive Premiership
victory as struggling Everton's problems piled up.
Peter Crouch's clever finish and Steven Gerrard's deflected
25-yard drive put Liverpool two up inside 17 minutes.
James Beattie, who had a header controversially ruled out,
pulled one back four minutes before half-time.
But Djibril Cisse fired in Liverpool's third after 47
minutes and Everton were reduced to nine men when Phil
Neville and Mikel Arteta were sent off.
Beattie's header may have ended Liverpool's sequence of 761
minutes of Premiership action without conceding a goal, but
it was another impressive performance from Rafael Benitez's
rapidly-improving side.

Reina recruits derby scouting help
Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina has taken on the role of chief
scout in a bid to secure his first Merseyside derby win
tonight.
Reina has invited Villarreal skipper Quique Alvarez to stay
with him on Merseyside for derby week.
Alvarez was part of the team which defeated Everton in
August's Champions League qualifier.
Reina explained: "I have spoken to my friends from
Villarreal about the game. Their captain Quique Alvarez is
coming to watch the match and will be staying in my house
for the next three days.
"I will be looking for fresh information from him about how
to beat Everton."

Bent's a fan of 'big boy'
Marcus Bent believes there is nothing bigger than the
Merseyside derby.
The Everton striker is competing for a starting place in
this evening's 202nd meeting with Liverpool.
And he said: "The derby is so important to us. We know
exactly what it means to the fans and we value it so highly
as well. The win over Liverpool last year was amazing. It
would be great to experience that again.
"The derby is different to London because as a youngster I
was brought up at Brentford and we had derbies but this is
massive.
"This is the big boy. You can't get any bigger than this.
"Everyone will be off work, everyone will be up for it,
everyone will be in good spirit."

Benitez eyeing another Spain raid
Liverpool are planning another swoop on Spain in the
forthcoming transfer window.
Rafael Benitez has set his sights on a double raid on

Cesar.

options but suffered a setback earlier this week when
Spartak Moscow's Nemanja Vidic opted to join Manchester U.(Daily

Benitez: Europe's Everton problem
Rafael Benitez has revealed he sympathises with David Moyes
over Everton's hugely disappointing campaign.
Liverpool travel to Goodison this evening for the 202nd
Mersey-side derby looking to extend a run of eight
successive Premiership wins.
By contrast, Everton have lost their last two games 4-0 and
are just three points above the relegation zone.
And Benitez has a view on just why Everton have struggled
since last season's fourth place finish and their first
campaign in the Champions League, which turned so sour with
their elimination in the third qualifying round and then the
exit from the UEFA Cup.
Benitez said: "It is very difficult to play in the Champions
League for the first time and then to concentrate on your
domestic football.
"You lose some games in the domestic league and you lose
some confidence.
"Teams play hard, finish well in the top four and then start
thinking about Champions League. Players lose concentration,
you can lose a couple of games but must not lose
confidence."

Rafa: Signing Sissoko was easy
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has taunted Merseyside rivals
Everton over the signing of Momo Sissoko.
Everton made a concerted effort to sign the Mali
international over the summer, but were beaten to the punch
by Liverpool.
"We had an advantage over Everton," said Benitez. "I already
knew the player.
"He had good memories of winning trophies with me at
Valencia.
"We knew Everton were interested, but it was easy to sign
him."

Benitez in no mood to sit back
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is still demanding
improvement from his squad despite the club being on their
best league run for 15 years.
The last time they won eight on the trot was at the
beginning of the 1990-91 season but with the 202nd
Merseyside derby next up tonight Benitez is unwilling to
allow his players to ease off.
Their current run of eight successive wins without conceding
a goal equals a club clean sheets record set in 1923 and
they have now produced their best Premiership start after 16
matches.
And even though they are 10 points better off than they were
at the same stage last season, Benitez is looking for
improvement.
"The team is improving week after week and now I want to see
that continuing right to the end," said the Spaniard.

Confusion over Josemi
Sevilla are still hoping to land Liverpool defender Josemi,
but Paco Herrera has cast doubt on the move.
The Liga outfit are hoping to land Josemi and his agent
Fernando Redondo has confirmed that his client wants to
leave Anfield.
"Josemi spoke with Rafa Benitez before the World Club
championships," Redondo told Radio Punto.
"That left the door open for an interesting option that
could come for him in January."
Despite the interest from Seville, The Reds' chief scout
Paco Herrera claims Josemi's departure is unlikely.
"I do not believe that Rafa Benitez gives him permission to
go away," said Herrera.
"He wants two players in each position and at right back he
only has him and
[Steve] Finnan."
