Reina record
Pepe Reina has taken another Liverpool goalkeeping record.
Reina has beaten Ray Clemence's record for most clean sheets kept in the first 50 league games for the club.
In his first 50 league games for Liverpool Clemence kept an impressive 25 clean sheets. Last night Pepe Reina kept his 26th clean sheet in 48 league appearances to edge ahead of Clemence in the record books. Clemence did concede less goals overall however, conceding 33 to Reina's 36.
Jerzy Dudek also kept 25 clean sheets in his first 50 league games for the Reds but he conceded 41 goals in that time. Bruce Grobbelaar conceded 39 goals while keeping 25 clean sheets in his first 50 league games.

Xabi could return at Wigan
Xabi Alonso could return to the centre of the Liverpool midfield for this weekend's Premiership trip to Wigan.
The Spanish midfielder has missed the last two games after picking up an injury during the Reds' Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven last week.
With central midfield options limited because of long term injuries to Momo Sissoko and Bolo Zenden, Benitez will be keen to welcome back Alonso for the trip to the JJB Stadium.
"Maybe Xabi will be available but also we have to check if we have any new injuries today," he said.

Kilbane eyes end to drought
Ex-Evertonian Kevin Kilbane is determined to heap more away-day misery on Liverpool when The Reds travel to Wigan Athletic this weekend.
Kilbane is without a goal in 75 top flight matches but views the visit of Liverpool to The JJB Stadium on Saturday as the perfect opportunity to break that duck.
Rafa Benitez's Liverpool side have still to win away from home in the Premiership this season and have failed to score in their last five on the road.
Goal droughts are something Kilbane knows all about, but the winger is hopeful he can help his side get back to winning ways after last Sunday's defeat at Tottenham.
"As an ex-Evertonian, I'm looking forward to playing Liverpool. I managed one win and a couple of draws against them while at Goodison, but there were more defeats than anything," said Kilbane.
"I didn't score in any of those games so it would be nice to score on Saturday and there would be a few happy Evertonians if I did that.
"I know I should be scoring more goals. It's one area of my game that I am looking
to improve upon."

Redknapp has no time for Rafa claims
Harry Redknapp rubbished Rafa Benitez's claims Portsmouth got a point at Anfield by timewasting.
Liverpool boss Benitez hit out after Wednesday night's Premiership showdown on Merseyside ended goalless.
But Pompey boss Harry Redknapp hit back saying: "I wouldn't know what time-wasting was. I would never tell a team of mine to do that.
"In fact I kept shouting at our full-back Noe Pamarot not to take so much time at throws because he would get himself booked. And that is what happened in the end.
"Surely no-one is saying we came to Anfield to time-waste for 90 minutes, that would
be ridiculous."

We've blown big chance
Jamie Carragher hopes his spell back in central midfield comes to an instant end, despite shining in last night's otherwise frustrating 0-0 draw with Portsmouth.
Carragher was man-of-the-match, but today reflected on a missed opportunity as Liverpool failed to push themselves into the top four.
"We're disappointed with the result and the performance," he said. "When you look at how the other results went last night, we feel even worse today. Aston Villa, Arsenal, Bolton and Everton all losing gave us a big opportunity which we haven't taken.
"It was a frustrating night and we didn't really create many chances, but you always have to try to take some positives and we're a point closer to the top four than we were before the game. I know that's a small consolation."

Rovers drop defender exit hint
Chairman John Williams will have alerted a number of clubs after admitting that Blackburn may be forced to sell in-demand Lucas Neill.
The 28-year-old Australian international full-back has been heavily linked with a move to Premiership rivals Liverpool, Chelsea and Newcastle, while Spanish giants Barcelona have also reportedly expressed an interest in him.
Neill is out of contract at Ewood Park next summer and has snubbed the offer of a new contract to stay, leaving Williams resigned to the fact he might have to offload him in January's transfer window in order to get some sort of fee for his services.
He told Sky Sports News: "Lucas has said he would like to look at fresh challenges, having spent a considerable time here.
"It all depends on whether the offer is right for the club and whether Lucas wants to leave in January."

Redknapp praises Pompey
Harry Redknapp was full of praise for his hardworking Portsmouth side who scrapped out a 0-0 draw at Liverpool on Wednesday.
"We worked hard - it was difficult and we changed the system today because we had one or two players missing up front with injuries so it was difficult," said Redknapp after
 the game.
"It was a terrific effort from everybody."

Rafa: It was a frustrating night
Rafael Benitez said he felt a sense of frustration at Liverpool's inability to break down a resolute Portsmouth side and admitted his team didn't quite do enough to win the game.
"In the first half we were controlling everything and had a lot of shots and crosses but in the second half they played deeper and some of our players were a little bit tired," reflected Benitez.
"We know we could have gone third in the table but when you cannot win you must be happy if your team works hard and tries to do the right things. We tried to do the right things and it was difficult at times because they wasted a lot of time but if the referee doesn't do anything about it you can't do anything."

Reds fire blank in Anfield bore draw
Liverpool blew the chance to overtake Portsmouth and move into the Premiership top four with a disappointing 0-0 stalemate at Anfield.
Pompey's massed ranks survived a near-constant bombardment to claim a precious draw - a tremendous reward for a club who had not won at Anfield for 55 years.
Pompey unashamedly time-wasted and wore Liverpool down. Steven Gerrard tried to be the one-man hero, but not even his Captain Marvel act could rescue anything for Liverpool in this one.

Craig Bellamy cleared of assault

Wales and Liverpool footballer Craig Bellamy has been cleared of assaulting two women in a Cardiff nightclub.
The Cardiff-born 27-year-old was accused of assault against Sophie Palmer, 19, and her friend Holly Smith, 20, at the No 10 club in February.
The player was cleared by district judge John Charles after a five-day trial at Cardiff Magistrates Court.
His co-defendant, Franklin Lynch, 52, of Barry, was found not guilty of common assault against Ms Palmer.
The judge told the striker: "It was inconsistent to convict you with the serious discrepancies in the prosecution case and the two charges are dismissed."
Speaking after the case, Mr Bellamy's solicitor, Matthew de Maid, said his client had missed training and games for his club, Liverpool, and the case had also affected his preparation for Wales international matches.
The £6m player will miss Liverpool's Wednesday night match against Portsmouth.
Mr de Maid added: "He has always said the allegations were false and that's been proved correct.
"He understands that given his profession he will get a degree of hassle."

Benitez sympathy for Bellamy

Rafael Benitez hopes Craig Bellamy can focus on his Liverpool career after his court case ends.
Reports in the morning papers indicated the Reds could be interested in a January transfer deal for Bellamy, who is on trial at Cardiff Magistrates Court this week accused of assaulting two young women at a nightclub in the Welsh capital in February.
Having only scored twice in 18 appearances this season, Bellamy has so far failed to deliver for Benitez's side since his summer switch from Blackburn - hence the transfer rumours.
But Benitez is standing by his £6million signing and believes he will prove his worth when able to concentrate on matters on the pitch.
"Craig won't be involved against Portsmouth. He's not available because he's in court again today," the Anfield boss told the Liverpool Echo.
"We tried to bring him back in time, but it's clear he wouldn't be 100% or fit enough physically or mentally for a Premiership game.
"We needed him in the last game (against Manchester City), but you could see he wasn't fit or focused. He hasn't been sleeping properly.
"It will be good for him and us when he can start thinking only about football again. It's not easy for a player, especially for one at a club like Liverpool, when these things
are happening."

Benitez expects big things of Insua
Rafael Benitez believes that his latest South American import could make a big impact at Anfield.
The Anfield chief has snatched Argentinian teenager Emiliano Insua from under the noses of several top European clubs, and the left-back will start an 18-month loan deal from Boca Juniors in January.
Said Benitez: "He arrives in January and will be on an 18-month loan with an option for us to sign him permanently.
"He's just 17, 18 in January, and is already in [Argentina's] under-20 national team. That means he is a very good player and being used by Argentina in much older age groups already.
"The question is how quickly he can settle down here. He will take part in some games with the first team when he arrives to see how he is developing."
"We could have signed a player who is 19 or 20 and he may have more experience, but I believe Insua has the potential to make an impression here."
The deal is believed to be costing the Merseyside club an initial £1million with further payments as he progresses through the ranks.

Mannix injury ends Stanley loan
Accrington's depleted squad has been hit by news that injury has ended midfielder David Mannix's loan spell from Liverpool.
Mannix, who made his Stanley debut at Grimsby after signing just ahead of the deadline, has a knee injury.
Scans have shown the 21-year-old sustained ligament damage and he has returned to Anfield for treatment.
Mannix will not be fit to return for Accrington before the end of his one-month loan agreement.

Sami to get midfield nod?
Rafael Benitez has admitted he has considered playing Sami Hyypia in midfield tonight.
With Bolo Zenden joining Momo Sissoko and Xabi Alonso on the injury list, Steven Gerrard is the only fit central midfielder in the first team squad. Although both Jamie Carragher and Daniel Agger have been tipped to partner Gerrard against Portsmouth tonight, Rafa Benitez admitted Sami Hyypia was the first player he considered for the role.
"The first name that came into my head to replace Bolo was Sami, honestly," said the Liverpool boss.
"People have been saying that Daniel's emergence might mean the end for Sami, but maybe Sami can play as a holding midfielder. I need to check whether he has the tactical movement and awareness you need playing there, but it's not difficult.
"You just need to be clever. What do you need to do? In Argentina, it's their number 5, a holding midfielder who's a centre back playing a bit higher. I've spoken to him two or three weeks ago about that. Now I just need to think about which option to take."

Jol denies Defoe exit
Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe "is going nowhere" according to his manager Martin Jol.
Defoe, 24, has not been a regular this season but has scored five in his last four starts, and reports have linked him with a move when the transfer window opens.
However, Jol is determined to keep Defoe at the club as they remain in all the cup competitions and are looking to climb the Barclays Premiership following an indifferent start.
The Dutchman said: "Jermain is going nowhere. I'm not going to sell someone who is playing such a crucial part to our challenge in the Carling Cup, UEFA Cup and Premiership.
"There is always speculation about Jermain. The transfer window will come up again in a month's time and he has already been linked with Manchester United, Liverpool Aston Villa and Portsmouth."

Thommo's on an Anfield mission
Portsmouth's David Thompson returns to Anfield on Wednesday night to face former club Liverpool intent on stopping Steven Gerrard.
Thompson said: "Gerrard is a superb player and it will suit him if the game is played at
a quick tempo.
"To get something from the game, we will need to slow the tempo down and stop Gerrard.
"But obviously it is not quite as simple as that because they have great players all over the pitch so we have to dig in."

Reina in new deal talks
Liverpool v Portsmouth previewLiverpool keeper Jose Reina is being offered a new contract by Reds boss Rafa Benitez.
The Spanish shot-stopper endured a difficult start to the season and was linked with a move to Valencia recently.
With Livorno's Marco Amelia claiming the Merseysiders want to sign him, there has been speculation that Reina could be departing Anfield next year.
Yet Benitez is determined to keep his fellow countryman and is discussing fresh terms with the 24-year-old.
"I'm really pleased with 'Pepe' and we're talking to him about extending his contract here," revealed Benitez.
"When we decided to bring him here, it was because we knew he was a very good goalkeeper.
"But I also knew the person and his mentality. He's a very good professional, always joking in the dressing room. It's all very positive.
"He's got two more years on his contract after this season.
"We're looking to extend because we know there were some clubs asking about him and we don't want to sell."

Rafa impressed by Pompey
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has backed Portsmouth to maintain their good start to the season.
Pompey are currently fourth in the Premiership after some terrific early results, but Liverpool can overtake them with victory at Anfield on Wednesday.
However, Benitez has been impressed by Harry Redknapp's side this season and is expecting a tough game.
"We beat Portsmouth three times last season, but that was then, this is now," he said.
"They have improved their squad although they too are having problems like us away from home, winning just two so far.
"But when you have experienced players who win plenty of matches, then the confidence is high. It is what has happened to Portsmouth.
"They have quality and experience, and young players with great work rate. They have a balance."
"They are having problems with injuries and we will have to wait to see whether they can stay in their high position," he remarked.
"But they do have enough quality to make a real impact on the division this season."

TUESDAY 28

Injuries narrow Rafa's options
Rafa Benitez knows he can no longer be taken to task over his deployment of Steven Gerrard as he is Liverpool's only fit central midfielder.
As he juggles with the Reds' worsening injury crisis before Wednesday's Premiership match against Portsmouth, Benitez consoled himself with that small crumb of comfort.
"At least nobody can question where I play Steven Gerrard now!" he said.
"He's the only fit central midfielder I have got left so that is where he plays.
"That is the end of the talk about his role, I hope, because I have no other choice."
It is just as well Benitez can see the funny side of a situation which has now seen Bolo Zenden added to his injury list, the Dutch international set for a knee operation on Wednesday which will keep him out until the New Year.
Xabi Alonso, Mohamed Sissoko, Mark Gonzalez, Fabio Aurelio, Stephen Warnock and Harry Kewell are also unavailable through injury.
Benitez may move Jamie Carragher into a holding midfield role against Pompey
alongside Gerrard.

Harry up for Anfield test
Pompey boss Harry Redknapp has admitted his side will face a tough task rebounding from Sunday's defeat at Newcastle at Anfield against Liverpool on Wednesday evening.
The Reds have won six and drawn one of their seven home games this season, while Pompey have lost their last five away games.
Redknapp told the club website: "It is as difficult a place to go when looking to bounce back but we will give it a right go."

Zenden out for five weeks
Rafael Benitez today confirmed Liverpool will be without Dutch midfielder Bolo Zenden for five weeks.
Zenden will undergo an operation tomorrow after damaging the medial ligaments in his knee.
This latest injury setback couldn't have come at a worse time for Benitez, who now has Steven Gerrard as his only fit central midfielder available for tomorrow night's clash
with Portsmouth.

Liverpool confirm Insua deal
Liverpool have confirmed that they have agreed a deal to sign 17-year-old Argentina under-20 international full-back Emiliano Insua in January.
The Boca Juniors left-back will initially sign an 18-month loan-deal with Liverpool. The Reds will then have the option to sign Insua on a permanent basis at the end of next season.
Rafael Benitez confirmed today: "He is a good, young player with a lot of potential. He will come to us in January and we'll start to assess him at Melwood."
Insua was present at the PSV Eindhoven game last week and Liverpool are thought to have beaten off stiff competition to land his signature.
The Liverpool Echo were first to reveal the news last week and hinted that Insua may be part of the first team squad before the end of the season such is his talent.

Inconsistent Reds can still go third!
It's not beyond the realms of possibility Liverpool will be in the top three by
tomorrow night.
If so, I'm not sure if this is a reflection of how much Rafa Benitez's side has improved recently, or simply further evidence the Premiership isn't very strong.
There are those who continuously argue the Premiership is the best in the world.
That's wrong. English football is the most demanding, but it's certainly not the most skilful.
Spain and Italy have more quality, but England is tougher physically and the pace of the game is much higher - often creating exciting but not necessarily brilliant football.
Chelsea and Manchester United have swiftly created a league of their own this season.
In a few weeks, you'll see Liverpool and Arsenal form a second tier, battling it out for third and fourth.
As for the rest, between fifth and fifteen, the difference isn't that great.
The fact Liverpool can have what most agree is an inconsistent season, but possibly go third without winning an away game, says everything about the overall standard.

Bellamy 'slapped by teenager at nightclub'
Liverpool striker Craig Bellamy told a court today how he was slapped in the face following a nightclub spat with a teenager.
The Wales forward said he was struck following an exchange of words with the then 19-year-old Sophie Palmer while walking through a packed corridor at the No 10 nightclub in Cardiff city centre during the early hours of February 5 this year.
Miss Palmer claims she was the one assaulted by Bellamy and his friend, Franklin Lynch, following the exchange of words.
Miss Palmer’s friend, Holly Smith, who was 20 at the time, also accuses Bellamy of assaulting her by grabbing her by the wrist.
Cardiff Magistrates’ Court heard that 27-year-old Bellamy had started the night at the Soda Bar before entering the nightclub.
Bellamy, who was accompanied by his co-defendant at the Soda Bar, had also arranged to meet up with former Wales rugby union international Neil Jenkins, who was returning from Twickenham on the evening of Saturday, February 4 after having watched Wales play England in the Six Nations.
After drinking around four to five bottles of Budweiser, Bellamy said he moved on to the No 10 nightclub where he headed straight to the Champagne VIP bar.

Kuyt's 20-20 vision
Dirk Kuyt has a 20-20 vision for his first season at Anfield - 20 goals and 20 assists.
The popular Dutch striker has already made a flying start to fulfilling the first part of that target, with five goals as he settles in to life in the Premiership.
But in the past week he has also helped himself to his first three assists of the season, two for skipper Steven Gerrard.
And he admits that making goals is as much a part of his game as scoring them.
"Last year I got 24 goals and over 20 assists," he said. "For me it is normal to have assists. It is unusual I have had to wait until this week for my first one. I hope more
will follow."
