Rafa rubbishes transfer demand stories

Rafa Benitez has rubbished reports claiming he has demanded a £50m transfer kitty this summer.
The Anfield boss woke up this morning to several stories suggesting he would make expensive demands of the club's American co-chairman –
a claim the Spaniard denies.
"The stories are ridiculous. Total rubbish," said Benitez.
"They have me trying to sign Daniel Alves, who already has an agreement with Barcelona, so how could I be trying to sign him?
"I am working hard with Rick Parry, who is in regular contact with
the Americans, and there are no problems.
"The reports are just unbelievable."

Enabling works start on new LFC stadium
Liverpool City Council granted full planning permission on June 19 to Liverpool Football Club to build a 60,000 seater stadium and outline planning permission for a mixed use development on the existing
Anfield stadium site.
The stadium will incorporate a club shop, conference and banqueting facilities, parking for almost 1,000 vehicles and a Community Partnership centre. Its design is ultimately capable of accommodating up to 73,000 people subject to further planning permission.
LFC has instructed Laing O'Rourke to commence enabling works under
a licence issued by the Liverpool City Council. Works started on June 23.

Liverpool FC reject
£9m bid for Crouch

Liverpool have rejected a £9m bid from Portsmouth for Peter Crouch.
And the FA Cup winners suffered a double blow when Yossi Benayoun moved quickly to knock reports tipping him for a summer switch
to Fratton Park.
Portsmouth have been linked with Reds striker Crouch all summer, but last night made a concrete offer of £9m.
But Harry Redknapp was stunned when Rafa Benitez immediately rejected the bid.
The Anfield boss is holding out for £10m, but Pompey seem unlikely
to increase their offer.
“I think Liverpool want a bit too much money for him,” said Redknapp.
“If that’s the case we’ll move on to the next option.”

Anderson reveals Swans wish
Swansea City look to have succeeded in their bid to re-sign Liverpool teenager Paul Anderson.
Anderson spent last season on loan at the Liberty Stadium, making 22 League One starts as The Swans gained promotion to the Championship.
Manager Roberto Martinez has previously expressed his interest in bringing Anderson back to the club, but Nottingham Forest are also reportedly keen on securing his services.
However, Martinez has revealed that the winger has indicated his desire
to return to Swansea.
Martinez told the South Wales Evening Post: "I met with Paul and we agreed that as far as football reasons go it's clear, he wants to play for Swansea.
"We are delighted about that, but there are three parties here, ourselves, Liverpool and the player, and we must all come together now on
an agreement."

MONDAY 23
Benayoun pledges future to Reds
Yossi Benayoun seems intent on dashing Harry Redknapp’s hopes of signing him by insisting he has no intention of leaving Liverpool.
Redknapp is intent on keeping Portsmouth moving forward and he indicated on Monday that he was keen on luring Benayoun away
from Anfield.
The Israel international had a steady first season at Anfield, but is keen
to remain on Merseyside despite admitting they are unlikely to land
the Premier League title any time soon.
“There are three or four clubs in England willing to buy me after the season I have just had,” Benayoun told the Jewish Chronicle. “But I want to stay at Liverpool until the end of my career.
”It really moves me when I go out on to the pitch at Anfield and the crowd start singing.”
Liverpool last won the league title in 1990 and Benayoun feels the club may have hit a mental obstacle they are struggling to overcome.
"It could be that after so many years without becoming champions that
a mental problem has developed at the club,” said Benayoun. “You have to remember this is the toughest league in the world and Liverpool are never going to be the favourites. I understand it is difficult to remain at
the top but things can change so quickly.”

Platt stands by Barry exit belief
Former Aston Villa skipper David Platt has stood by his belief that Gareth Barry should quit the Midlands club and move to Liverpool.
Villa boss Martin O'Neill described Platt's comments as "worthless" when he originally made his stance on Barry known when working as
a Sky Sports pundit last month.
But the ex-England midfielder is unbowed and believes Barry has to leave - in the same way Michael Carrick left Tottenham to move to Manchester United two years ago.
Platt said: "Michael Carrick needed to leave and join a big club because it puts bigger demands on you and it is the same with Gareth Barry.
"It's not necessarily the people within the club but just the level you are playing at and what you are playing for.
"I've always said that Michael Carrick was like a Rolls Royce. He needed to put his foot down and have to run to show what it could do - and I'd say the same with Gareth.
"At the moment he can walk into the Aston Villa team. He is guaranteed
a place.
"At Liverpool there will be a massive amount of pressure next year. There will be more demands of him at Liverpool than there would be at Villa and he needs to go to reach that level."

Liverpool FC owners' £100m credit crunch
Liverpool’s American owners are facing a major credit crunch backlash over stalled plans to build a new stadium for the Reds.
Tom Hicks and George Gillett may need to put in as much as £100m of their own money if they want to borrow a further £200m.
And that casts massive doubt over their ability to go ahead with the ambition of building the 70,000 seat-plus super stadium, designed by Dallas based architects HKS and rolled out amid a fanfare of publicity
last year.

Harry wants Yossi, Crouch too pricey
Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp has admitted he is interested in Yossi Benayoun, but any move for his Liverpool team-mate Peter Crouch could be doomed to failure.
Israel international Benayoun is believed to be attracting interest from both Portsmouth and Manchester City and Redknapp has never attempted to disguise his admiration for his former player Crouch who has found first team football hard to come by under Rafa Benitez.
While Redknapp has opened the door to the possible signing of Benayoun, the Pompey boss has hinted he is being priced out of a move for England striker Crouch.
“Of course I'd like to have someone like Yossi Benayoun,” Redknapp told The News.
“He's a top player. I don't know what the chances are of getting him out
of Liverpool.
“It's known I like Crouchie, too. But it doesn't look like anything is happening there. I think Liverpool want a bit too much money for him.
“If that's the case then we'll move on to the next option.”

Juve set to make bid for Alonso
Juventus are set to make their first official move for Xabi Alonso this week after the player hinted he fancied a move to Italy.
And Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is hopeful that his £16million valuation will be matched as he continues his quest to maximise his assets to build more transfer funds.
Juve have confirmed their pursuit of the midfielder but have been pondering over their move in light of interest in at least two other players in the same position.
But they have been alerted by Alonso speaking of his "fascination" with Italian football over the weekend and will look to prise him away form Anfield this week, although he is still involved in Euro 2008.
"I have little to say about Juve because at the moment I am very focused on Euro 2008 and on Spain," said Alonso before his side reached then semi-finals with victory over Italy last night.

Torres and Co. through to semis
Spain's quarter-final win over Italy means that Liverpool will have four representatives in the semi-finals of Euro 2008.
Fernando Torres played his part in a hard fought game with the Italians, before being substituted in the second half.
Xabi Alonso, Pepe Reina and Alvaro Arbeloa played no part in
the goalless draw, which ended in a penalty shoot-out that Spain won.
Spain now face Russia in Vienna on Thursday night and if victorious will face the winners of Germany and Turkey in the final on Sunday.

Kewell in no rush to decide future

Harry Kewell has been linked with a move to Italian giants Roma - but insists he is "in no rush" to decide his future after leaving Liverpool.
The Australian winger is looking for a new club after seeing out his contract at Anfield.
Kewell has been linked with a possible move to Roma, who have already signed his former Reds team-mate John Arne Riise.
The former Leeds man, who featured for Australia in their 1-0 defeat to China on Sunday, says he is in no rush to decide his future
"I'm on holiday for a week or so and then I'll decide my future," Kewell told Fox Sports. "But for now I'm just going to relax.
"In this day and age, clubs take their time. There's a long way to go and
a big process to go through, so I'm in no rush."
When asked specifically about Roma, Kewell replied: "It's a beautiful city. I've been there once when I was younger."
