Carragher accepts position
Jamie Carragher accepts he must bide his time for a chance
to play in the heart of England's defence.
The Liverpool stopper's outstanding form for his club will
not result in him playing in his favoured position for Steve
McClaren's men in upcoming internationals, with John Terry
and Rio Ferdinand, two of the world's best, ahead of him.
Carragher is expected to start against Israel in Saturday's
Euro 2008 qualifier, but at left-back, due to Ashley Cole's
suspension and an injury to Wayne Bridge.
"I'd love to play at centre-half for England but John Terry
and Rio Ferdinand were probably two of our best players in
the World Cup last summer," he said.
"You can't really argue with that. For me, John Terry is the
best centre-back in the world. Over the last three or four
years, I wouldn't have anyone ahead of him.
"Then you've got Rio who was as good as anyone at the World
Cup, a £30million defender, so I am in no position to
complain about not playing at centre-back. You are talking
about world-class players."

Milan backs Rafa plan
Milan Mandaric has backed Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez's call
for Premiership clubs to be allowed to field reserve sides
in the Football League.
The Reds chief feels the progress of younger players is
being stifled by the lack of competitive football open to
them.
Benitez's proposal has met with some stiff opposition from
clubs further down the leagues, but he has an ally in
Leicester chief Mandaric.
"We owe it to supporters all over the country to give them
the best quality product," he told Sky Sports News.
"If we can demonstrate that we can give a good product -
even better than we have - I think it could work."

Defender Roque signs on at Latics
Oldham have completed the signing of teenage Liverpool
defender Miki Roque on loan until the end of the season.
The 18-year-old central defender, who can also operate in
midfield, could go straight into Oldham's starting line-up
at Brentford on Saturday.
Roque starred for Liverpool's 2006 FA Youth Cup-winning
team, scoring in the final against Manchester City, and has
made one appearance for Rafael Benitez's first team this
season.
That came in the Champions League clash against Galatasaray
in Istanbul in early December.
Catalonia-born Roque arrived at Anfield from Spanish second
division side Lleida in the summer of 2005 and is considered
one of Liverpool's brightest prospects.

Reds' hero gets his MBE

Agent: No Real approach for Rafa
Rafael Benitez's agent insists Real Madrid have not made an
approach for the Liverpool manager.
Reports in Spain and England claimed Benitez has been
targeted by the Spanish club to replace Fabio Capello, who
has not made the expected impact at the Bernabeu after
returning for a second spell.
"I have heard the rumours in the Spanish media linking Rafa
Benitez with Real Madrid," Manuel Garcia Quilon said.
"However, as far as I know, Real Madrid have not shown an
official interest in Benitez."
Benitez is a former Real Madrid youth team coach but Garcia
Quilon pointed out the 46-year-old only signed a four-year
contract extension with the the Merseysiders last year.
"I cannot speak for Benitez, but the fact is that he has
three years left on his contract with Liverpool," he said.
Benitez won two league titles and one UEFA Cup at former
club Valencia and led Liverpool to Champions League glory in
his first season at Anfield.

Goalkeeper loan extended
Liverpool have agreed to extend David Martin's loan spell
with Accrington Stanley until April 23, 2007.
The England under-20 international goalkeeper made his
comeback from injury during Saturday's 1-0 win over Torquay
United.
He was originally injured after just five minutes of his
Stanley debut during the 2-2 draw with Lincoln City on
February 24.

Dates set for Youth Cup Final

Anfield on Monday, April 16, with the return leg three days

Liverpool face either Manchester United or Arsenal as they
seek to become only the fifth side to retain the trophy. The
Gunners currently hold a 1-0 lead in that semi going into
the Old Trafford leg on April 2.
Both legs of the final kick-off at 7.45pm and will be shown

Rafa's reserve idea condemned
Peterborough director of football Barry Fry believes Rafael
Benitez's proposal for reserve teams to play in the Football
League "would never happen in a million years".
The Liverpool manager's suggestion has been met with
widespread derision among lower division clubs.
The Spaniard is concerned his second string are paying the
price for an ineffective reserve league and believes they
would benefit from competitive action in the Football League
- an idea mooted by his Iberian counterpart Jose Mourinho,
the Chelsea manager, in December.
Reserve teams play in lower league competition throughout
continental Europe, but the restructuring would inevitably
mean the Football League would lose some established clubs.
And Fry told PA Sport: "It would never happen here, not in a
million years.
"The Football League is a thriving, 72-club competitive
competition which is one of the best supported in the world
- 16 million people watch it every season.
"No-one would want to watch the reserve teams of any club -
I don't care if they're Real Madrid, Juventus or Fray
Bentos!
"If Rafa Benitez wants his young players to get competitive
games then all he has to do is loan them out to clubs like
us."

Reiziger blow hits PSV plans
PSV Eindhoven defender Michael Reiziger is set to miss the
rest of the season because of a stomach injury.
The 33-year-old will undergo an operation on the muscle
problem which has hampered him since he joined the club in
2005.
The former Dutch international has only managed 25
Eredivisie appearances for PSV and it is now questionable
whether the club will extend his contract, which ends in the
summer.
Reiziger featured against Liverpool in the Champions League
earlier this season but Ronald Koeman's side must plan
without him for their two-legged quarter-final against
the Reds later this month.

Rafa: Well done boys
Rafa Benitez offered his congratulations to the club's
under-18s after they reached their second successive FA
Youth Cup final.
The Spaniard was at Anfield to watch the youngsters beat
Newcastle 3-1 in the second-leg of an action-packed semi to
secure a 7-3 aggregate win.
"I want to congratulate all the lads for tremendous
performances over the two legs against Newcastle," Benitez
told liverpoolfc.tv.
"It is a great achievement for them to reach a second
successive final and I want to wish them all the best
against Arsenal or Manchester United."

Reds in Youth Cup Final again
Liverpool Under-18s are in their second successive FA Youth
Cup final following a dramatic night of football at Anfield
played out in front of a delighted Rafa Benitez.
The young Reds came from behind to beat Newcastle 3-1 on the
night, 7-3 on aggregate, thanks to a Craig Lindfield brace
and a late scorcher from Jimmy Ryan.
Both sides had a man sent off in a fiery encounter, Astrit
Ajdarevic receiving a straight red for the hosts following a
dubious challenge early in the second half.
The holders will now battle it out against Manchester United
or Arsenal as they seek to become only the fifth team to
retain the trophy since its inception in 1953.
Arsenal or United await the Reds in a two-leg final, with
the Gunners currently holding a 1-0 lead going into the
second leg at Old Trafford.
Liverpool Under-18s: Hansen, Darby (Kelly 84), Burns,
Spearing (capt), Threlfall, Barnett, Ryan, Ajdarevic,
Lindfield (Scott 89), Flynn, Putterill (Irwin 81).

Silva: Reds meeting will decide third
Brazilian star Gilberto Silva accepts that the next time he
is back in Liverpool, the outcome will decide who finishes
third in the Barclays Premiership.
The 30-year-old captained Arsenal in their last-ditch defeat
in the snow at Everton on Sunday and admits the Gunners will
be fighting to hold on to third place when they return to
Merseyside at Anfield in a fortnight.
The clash with Liverpool, a lunchtime showdown on March 31,
will be the next match for both the Gunners and Rafael
Benitez's side.
"What we must do now is concentrate on our next game which
will be at Liverpool. We need to have that in our mind and
we know we need to do much better there than we did at
Everton.
"The next game now is the most important. At Liverpool the
outcome will be decisive over who finishes third. We know
that at Liverpool it is always hard, and we need to keep our
shape as a side and we cannot afford to lose our
concentration like we have done in a few important games
recently."

Midfielder injury blow
Liverpool midfielder Francisco Duran has been
ruled out of action for five to six months with a cruciate
ligament injury.
The Spanish youth international picked up the injury in only
his second reserve team game during the 1-0 defeat away at
Middlesbrough on March 7.
It is a blow for the former Malaga player who only joined
Liverpool in January.

Carragher: We're playing catch-up
Jamie Carragher admitted Liverpool are currently "a level
behind" Manchester United and Chelsea - but he hopes the gap
can be bridged with the players who will be brought in
during the summer.
The England defender believes the Reds are capable of
matching the best in one-off or two-legged situations as
demonstrated by their run to the quarter-finals of the
Champions League.
But he accepts that over a 10-month season, the Merseysiders
are playing catch-up in terms of competing with the top two
in the Barclays Premiership.
An uninspiring goalless draw at Aston Villa yesterday leaves
Rafael Benitez's side scrapping it out with Arsenal for
third spot.
"The league is a long hard slog and something we've got to
look to improve. We didn't make a great start to this season
and the year before was the same.
"We are just a level behind the top two at the moment. It's
something we want to bridge over the summer. It's up to the
manager and the coaching staff to see which direction they
want to go in."

LFC stadium delay ‘won’t affect revamp of
area’
One of the developers transforming the Anfield area of
Liverpool said the possible delay to the building of
Liverpool Football Club’s new stadium would not affect their
regeneration plans.
Haslam Homes, which is responsible for the housing renewal
programme in Anfield and Breckfield said there was an
element of flexibility in their plan.
A radical change in the design could mean a new planning
application would have to be submitted to Liverpool City
Council and there are fears that regeneration projects
linked to the stadium could also be held up.
However, Tim Wray, managing director of developer Haslam
Homes, told the Daily Post the issue would not affect its
own scheme.
“It won’t affect our plan,” he said. “If it comes on in year
one or two it will make little difference. We can develop
around it."

Momo won't change
Momo Sissoko won't change his tough tackling displays.
Despite missing the first leg against PSV Eindhoven through
suspension and being only one yellow card away from a
domestic suspension Momo Sissoko says he won't stop flying
into challenges.
"I've picked up a lot of yellow cards in England and have
had some trouble with referees," said the Mali
international.
"But part of my game is to make the tackles, that is why the
manager bought me and I don't think he wants me to change.
"I am aware of the comparisons to Patrick Vieira. I am
flattered by the comparisons and maybe one day people will
say that the comparisons were valid."
