FRIDAY 18 |
Gerrard: I want another star
Reds skipper Steven Gerrard says he is desperate to lead
Liverpool to their sixth European Champions League triumph
against AC Milan next week.
"I want another star on the shirt, another European Cup win
and that is the inspiration for us all," said Gerrard.
"The Champions League is the biggest and we want to succeed
again."

Hammers 'hoping to bag Bellamy'
West Ham are resigned to losing Carlos Tevez to a top
Spanish club in the summer - and could replace him with
Liverpool's Craig Bellamy.
Real Madrid are leading the chase for Tevez's services, and
attention in the East End has already turned to his
successor in Alan Curbishley's forward line.
And chairman Eggert Magnusson has reportedly earmarked
Bellamy as the man to maintain the Hammers' attacking zest.

Bolo blow hands Harry final chance
Liverpool's Bolo Zenden is doubtful for the Champions League
final after a training-ground ankle injury, so Harry Kewell
could make a comeback.
Dutch midfielder Zenden is on crutches after sustaining the
injury on Friday at the Reds' La Manga training camp in
Spain, ahead of next Wednesday's European showdown against
AC Milan in Athens.
Zenden - out of contract this summer - played in both legs
of the semi-final against Chelsea, and was ahead of Kewell
in the race for the left-wing spot.
Chile winger Mark Gonzalez, talking this week about the
prospect of leaving the club in the summer after a
disappointing season, could also find himself in contention
for the left-wing role.
Liverpool fly back from Spain on Saturday afternoon, and
Benitez will give Zenden every chance to prove his fitness.

Benitez: Reina to recover in time for
Athens
Pepe Reina will be fit for the Champions League final next
week – with Rafael Benitez again hinting Harry Kewell could
also make Liverpool’s starting line-up.
Reina has overcome the shoulder injury that ruled him out of
the final Premiership game against Charlton Athletic and had
threatened his participation against AC Milan on Wednesday.
And with Jerzy Dudek also recovered from his groin strain,
Benitez will be able to call on his two senior goalkeepers
in Athens.
Both have been taking full part during the training camp in
Spain this week, with Momo Sissoko presently the only slight
doubt with a knee problem.
Of Reina and Dudek, Benitez said: “They are okay and they
will be okay. I’m sure that at the end of the week both Pepe
and Jerzy will be fit.
“Sissoko has started training now, and we will see. But I
think all of them will be okay. There’s only Fabio Aurelio
and Luis Garcia injured. The rest of them will be fit.”

Maldini: Crouch and Gerrard must be
stopped
Paolo Maldini has pinpointed Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard
as the main threat to AC Milan lifting a seventh European
Cup in Athens.
And the veteran defender is confident he will be able to
play in a record-breaking eighth Champions League final next
Wednesday.
Maldini added: “I think we have to watch out for (Steven)
Gerrard and (Peter) Crouch.
“Gerrard because of the way he gets into good positions and
Crouch because of his height, but then danger could come
from anybody.
“I would say we are two teams with winning traditions.”

THURSDAY 17 |
Fear factor can lift Reds
John Arne Riise admits he sat back and admired the
brilliance of AC Milan a fortnight ago.
The Italians’ ruthless destruction of Manchester United sent
out a clear message that they are on a mission to avenge the
events of Istanbul two years ago.
The Norwegian is confident the Reds’ different style can
nullify the Italians’ attacking threat and ensure Rafa
Benitez’s side succeed where United failed.
“It’s going to be hard work for our wingers and full-backs
to follow them but if we can attack them there will be space
there.
“I heard some things that they believe they are more
technical and we are more physical.
“We can play football as well. but it’s true we are strong
and physical and we have to use that to our advantage
because they hate playing against that kind of team."

Gonzalez attracts Spanish interest
Mark Gonzalez could be heading for a swift return to La Liga
after the Champions League final as a host of Spanish clubs
are showing interest in the winger.
There were high hopes the South American would solve
Liverpool’s long standing problems on the left of midfield,
but despite countless opportunities, it’s been an erratic
debut campaign in England.
Now Real Betis are believed to be among those showing an
interest in taking the youngster back to Spain, where he
originally shone for Albacete, prompting his much delayed
£2.5m transfer to the Reds.

Ancelotti taunts Liverpool
Carlo Ancelotti has claimed a UEFA Champions League final
against Manchester United would make for a much more
spectacular showpiece.
Ahead of the game, Ancelotti has branded Rafa Benitez's side
the 'worst' of the English clubs in this season's
competition.
"On a technical level, they are the worst of the three
English teams to reach this season's semi-finals," Ancelotti
is quoted in The Sun.
"But that does not mean I'd have chosen to be playing them
in next week's final. I would have preferred Manchester
United."

Pennant confident of Euro glory
Jermaine Pennant looked ahead to next week's Champions
League final and insisted: "It will take something special
to beat us."
"I don't think we'll let them get the jump on us like the
last time and it'll be a much tighter game," he said. "But
I'm really looking forward to the whole experience. I've
never been this far in the tournament but now I have, I want
the winners' medal like the other lads have got.

L'OM target Cisse stay
Marseille are reportedly looking into the possibility of
keeping Djibril Cisse on loan for a further year.
Despite many critics and some difficult periods during his
time at the Stade Velodrome, the French striker has scored
14 goals this season.
Marseille have the option to buy Cisse from Liverpool for
€12million (£8.2million), but are unwilling to pay such a
fee.
A reduced price of €7million (£4.8million) is a possibility,
but an extension of his loan deal is the most likely option.

Giuly denies Reds contact
Barcelona midfielder Ludovic Giuly has denied holding talks
with Liverpool or Juventus.
Juventus are looking to build for next season after
clinching promotion back to Serie A, while Liverpool are
expected to venture into the transfer market following their
recent takeover.
However, he maintains that he is committed to Barca and will
stay for at least another season to see out his contract.
"I have had no contact with Lyon, Paris (Saint Germain),
Monaco, Juventus or Liverpool," he told a press conference
in Spain.
"I have no desire to leave. I have one year remaining on my
contract and I want to fulfil it.
"If I was forced to leave, I would look for a big club.
"Maybe people have noticed me less than last year, but I
still playing 60 per cent of the matches.
"It is not so bad at Barcelona, where I remain the only
Frenchman to have won titles."

Neal may join Reds Academy
Liverpool legend Phil Neal is being considered for a new
post in the club's youth Academy in the wake of Steve
Heighway's retirement.
Neal is the most decorated player in the club's history,
with 17 winners' medals including eight league titles and
four European Cups.
He has managerial experience with Bolton, Coventry and
Manchester City, and is seen as an ideal potential
figurehead for the Academy, involved in signing youngsters
and taking on an ambassadorial role.
Benitez does not want to run the Academy, but believes it is
essential his opinion carries far more weight on youth
matters. Having successfully run Real Madrid's academy, the
Spaniard has clear ideas on policy and technical coaching.
Neal would be an ideal choice as a 'father figure', having
tremendous respect in the city and the club for his role as
skipper in the great years of the 70s and 80s.
He joined Liverpool in 1974 as Bob Paisley's first signing
and went on to make 648 appearances. During an era of
unprecedented success he won eight league titles, four
European Cups, four League Cups and the UEFA Cup.

Masch: We did nothing wrong
Javier Mascherano insists himself and Carlos Tevez have done
nothing wrong as the controversy over their transfers to
West Ham continues to rumble on.
The Hammers were handed the massive fine after West Ham
admitted they broke Premiership transfer regulations when
they signed Tevez and Javier Mascherano from Corinthians
last August.
"I don't know about the politics, and I don't want to get
into the rights and wrongs of whether they should be docked
points, but I do know that we didn't do anything wrong,"
Mascherano told The Mirror.
"We just went there to play football, and even though I
didn't play much, they still gave me the opportunity, they
helped me - everyone, the staff the players and the fans."

Liverpool join battle for £15m Bent
Charlton have put a £15million price tag on Darren Bent
after Liverpool entered the race to sign the England
striker.
Tottenham and West Ham are also in the running for the
23-year-old, who is understood to prefer a move to White
Hart Lane.
Spurs have been linked with a £10m bid for Bent, while West
Ham have reportedly offered £12m, but neither offer is close
enough to Charlton’s asking price.
They hope Liverpool’s interest will begin a bidding war that
will see the price reach or even go above £15m, especially
as they turned down an £18m bid from West Ham
in January.

Kaka praises Gerrard
AC Milan midfielder Kaka says he would love to play
alongside Steven Gerrard.
Kaka and Gerrard will face each other in next week's
European Cup final but the Brazilian admits he would rather
be lining up alongside the Liverpool skipper than against
him.
"[Steven Gerrard is] an excellent player, in my opinion, he
is a modern player because he is a player who runs, marks,
knows how to pass, cross, score goals and he is a leader on
the field for Liverpool. He is a player that I would like to
have in my team," said
the Champions League top scorer.

Rafa: Keeping Gerrard is key
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez believes securing Steven Gerrard
on a long-term deal is key to the club's future.
Benitez believes keeping Gerrard shows a statement of intent
that the club is going places.
"The message we want to send out to the world is that we are
progressing," said Benitez.
"We are trying to prepare the club for the future and we are
trying to show confidence in the players who are here.
"Maybe we will try to get Steven's contract sorted out
before the holidays or maybe it will be a little bit later.
But certainly the situation is not the same as it was two
years ago.
"The good news is players want to stay because they know we
are progressing.
"If they stay here maybe they realise they have more
opportunities of winning trophies.
"We want to be a strong team and a strong squad. If we want
to win more titles in
the future, keeping players like Steven is key."
