The Carragher clone factory
Rafa Benitez is aiming to put the passion back into Anfield
- by signing a team of Jamie Carraghers!
The Reds' boss has adopted the Kop chant as his policy in
the transfer marker this summer.
Throughout last season's Champions League winning campaign,
the Anfield faithful sang: "We all dream of a team of
Carraghers!"
And Benitez has said: "I want to go to the market thinking
about players with passion as well as ability, then I know
that we will do better things in the future.
"My plan is to improve the reserve team for next season and
to have some more players ready for the first team.
"You need players like Jamie Carragher, for example, with
passion. We are trying to find, if possible, both.
"I have said many times Carragher has been the best defender
in England this season - he is maybe more important than
John Terry at Chelsea."

Reds must go for the jugular
UEFA have handed Rafa Benitez a massive headache with their
decision to dump Liverpool into the first qualifying round
of the Champions League.
No sooner will the players be back from their summer
holidays than they will be preparing not just to build their
fitness back up again, but for competitive games in Europe
from the middle of July.
It's a nonsensical decision by UEFA. If they had put
Liverpool into the third qualifying round noone would have
complained.
But they are effectively punishing them for winning the
Champions League by treating them like this and massively
disrupting the manager's entire pre-season plans.

Lens keen on Reds midfielder
French outfit Lens have been linked with a possible move for
Liverpool midfielder Salif Diao.
According to newspaper reports today, if Lens fail to
complete the permanent signing of Alou Diarra from
Liverpool, they will instead turn their intentions to Diao.

Owen 'wants Chelsea move'
Michael Owen has reportedly told Real Madrid that if he is
forced to leave the Bernabeu, he wants to join Premiership
champions Chelsea.
And the La Liga giants hope that Owen's preferrence to join
the Blues may be able to tempt Chelsea to part with their
talismanic midfielder Frank Lampard.

Liverpool to steer clear of Real duo
Rafael Benitez has hinted that Liverpool were unlikely to
move for Raul and Luis Figo when he claimed: "We know our
limitations."
The Champions League winners have been touted as candidates
to sign the pair, but Benitez played down the prospect of
Real Madrid's superstar element making the switch to
Anfield.
Qatar club Al Rayyan claim they are in a bidding war with
Liverpool for Figo, who could become available on the cheap
this summer, albeit on high wages.
His financial demands would probably put a strain on even
Liverpool, and Benitez told the El Mundo Deportivo
newspaper: "There are many people at Real Madrid that we are
aware of, but we really know our limitations."
Raul was suggested as a Liverpool target last week, but he
is considered by president Florentino Perez as the
embodiment of the Spanish giants and seems destined to spend
his entire career in Madrid.
"There are players that cannot leave and there are others we
do not want,"
Benitez added.

Reds 14/1 to defend title
Following official confirmation that Liverpool will be
allowed to defend their Champions League title, Ladbrokes
makes Rafa Benitez's Istanbul heroes 14/1 to win it again in
2006.
The Reds have been put into the first qualifying round of
the competition, meaning they will have to play six matches
in order to qualify for the group phase
The current favourites are Chelsea at 9/2, ahead of
Barcelona and AC Milan at 5/1 and Real Madrid at 8s.
Juventus are 10/1, with Manchester United 11/1 and Arsenal
12s.
"Having taken Valencia to two finals and Liverpool to the
title this season, 14/1 may be popular," said Balthazar
Fabricius of Ladbrokes.
"Chelsea however are sure to bring in some big transfers
over the summer and Mourinho will be hungry to regain his
special status in Europe."

Reds' Reina race hots up
Liverpool's bid to sign Spanish goalkeeper Jose Reina is
under threat from a rival Premiership club, reported to be
Arsenal.
Reina's agent Manuel Garcia Quilon told the Daily Star: "I
have had an offer for Reina from another English Premiership
team.
"At the moment I can't say where he will be playing next
season. If Liverpool don't resolve the difficulties, the
saga could take a surprising turn."
Villarreal goalkeeper Reina, 22, said: "Everything is in the
hands of the clubs and my agent. I am excited about joining
Liverpool but until the contract is signed I can't be sure
what will happen."

Diouf claims Bolton deal
El Hadji Diouf has revealed that he is set to sign a
four-year deal with Bolton.
Wanderers have always insisted they want to sign Diouf on
permanent basis after his highly successful loan spell at
The Reebok Stadium last season.
Diouf scored nine goals for The Trotters and despite a
couple of controversial incidents, he showed the sort of
form which persuaded Liverpool to pay Lens £10 million for
his services in 2002.
Now it seems Diouf's Liverpool career is set to end, with
Bolton ready to push through a permanent deal.
"You will be the first know this, I will sign for Bolton for
four years," Diouf told Senegal's L'Observateur.
He confirmed that Liverpool had agreed terms with Bolton.
Diouf insists he does not regret his time at Liverpool.
"I am not the kind of person who regrets, I would not regret
having signed for Liverpool because I earned a good living
there," he said.
"These are the risks of life."

Liverpool cash in on European win
Champions League winners Liverpool have earned £20.5m from
their European run to top the tournament's earnings table.
Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal made up three of the top four
Champions League earners, with Manchester United in eighth
place.
Chelsea secured £18.8m from television money and performance
bonuses, Arsenal were fourth with £15.7m, while Manchester
United picked up £10.9m.
Beaten finalists AC Milan were third with £17.5m and Celtic
bagged £7m.
The figures do not include gate receipts, another area where
English clubs outperform their European rivals.

Reds tipped as Figo suitors
Qatar-based club Al Rayyan have confirmed they are
interested in signing Luis Figo, and insist Liverpool are
amongst the clubs rivalling them for the Portuguese star.
Figo has been tipped to leave Real Madrid this summer as he
does not appear to be in coach Wanderley Luxemburgo's
first-team plans.
"We are genuinely on the trail of Figo, but Liverpool are
also there and will be a difficult rival," Al Rayyan
president Ali Al Noaimi told A Bola.
"We are prepared to match the offer of the English, if he
accepts it."

Reds reject Owen return
Liverpool have reportedly rejected the chance to buy back
Real Madrid striker Michael Owen, but the Premiership's big
three remain interested.
Reports in the media suggest that while the European
champions were sounded out by a third party acting for
Madrid and Owen on the prospect of him returning to Anfield,
they have declined the chance.

Kewell to miss Confederation Cup
Harry Kewell will not play for Australia in this summer's
Confederation Cup as he recovers from the groin injury that
forced him out of the European Cup final.
Kewell has undergone surgery on his groin after a tendon
snapped during the European Cup final. The injury means
Kewell misses Australia's participation in the Confederation
Cup which starts in Germany tomorrow.
Les Gelis, physio of the Australian national team, says:
"Harry's disappointed that he is missing the Confederations
Cup but he realises that it is more important that he gets
his injuries fixed and has a strong pre-season.
"That way he can be a key part of Liverpool's team for next
season and be in good shape for Australia's World Cup
qualifiers."

Smicer completes Bordeaux switch
Champions League hero Vladimir Smicer has officially cut his
ties with Liverpool and signed a two-year deal with FC
Girondins de Bordeaux.
The Czech international put pen to paper with the French
Ligue 1 outfit today after successfully completing a
medical.
The move comes less than a month after Smicer, whose Anfield
contract expired this summer, inspired the Reds to Euro
glory in Istanbul.
Signed from Lens by Gerard Houllier in 1999, he played 193
times for the club and scored 19 goals in a six-year stay on
Merseyside.
The highly likeable 32-year old suffered a torrid time with
injuries during his time with Liverpool but will forever be
remembered as a legend following his goalscoring heroics
against AC Milan.

Baggies want Kirkland loan deal
West Brom manager Bryan Robson has confirmed that he is
interested in taking Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Kirkland on
a long-term loan deal.
"We are interested in signing him for a certain amount of
time," Robson told the Liverpool website.
"I hope to have him over for training so we can assess his
fitness. If all is all right there could be a loan deal.
"I am hoping to have talks this week and a deal is something
we are definitely looking at."
Kirkland began his career in the West Midlands at Coventry
before moving to Liverpool for £6m in August 2001 but he has
been plagued by injuries in recent years.

Finnan under investigation
Liverpool defender Steve Finnan has been arrested on
suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, it was
revealed on Tuesday.
The right-back, who played in the Reds' heroic Champions
League final victory last month, was involved in a collision
in his black Range Rover which resulted in the death of a
pensioner.
Henry Nelson, 81, from Liverpool, suffered serious head
injuries and died five weeks later in hospital.
The accident happened in the Tuebrook area of the city on 27
January but Finnan, a Republic of Ireland international, was
not arrested until more than three months later.
An inquest into Mr Nelson's death has been opened and
adjourned until 4 July.
Finnan, who originally comes from Limerick, started his
career at non-league Welling before moving into league
football with Birmingham and Notts County.
In November 1998, he was bought by Fulham for £600,000
before moving to Liverpool ahead of the 2003/04 season.

Biscan in Fener talks
Igor Biscan is in talks with Fenerbahce as he prepares to
leave European champions Liverpool.
The Croatian midfielder enjoyed something of a renaissance
at Anfield under Rafa Benitez, but his improving displays
have not been enough to earn him a new contract.
Biscan revelled when being switched to the centre of
midfield, with his displays in the UEFA Champions League
being particularly impressive.
Benitez decided against offering Biscan a new deal and he is
set to leave Anfield when his contract expires at the end of
the month.
Turkish champions Fenerbahce are interested in now getting
their hands on a player they wanted to sign five years ago
when he left Dinamo Zagreb to move to Merseyside.
Biscan is thought to be in talks with Fener about a move to
Istanbul for the start of
next season.

the club, report the Echo.

West Ham dismiss Ferdinand Liverpool link
West Ham United have dismissed speculation linking defender
Anton Ferdinand with a £3m move to Liverpool.
West Ham's Legal Director Scott Duxbury said: "These rumours
are utter nonsense. Anton has come up through the Club's
Academy and made tremendous progress this season.
"He was a vital part of the side that won promotion, and our
aim is to now build on that side and take the Club forward
on the pitch."

Gerrard ready for contract talks
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has reiterated his desire
to stay at Anfield and hopes talks over a new deal can be
resolved quickly.
Asked today if he wanted to stay at Liverpool, the
25-year-old told Sky Sports News: "Of course. I've still got
two seasons left and I don't know how long talks will go on
for but the sooner it is sorted the better."
Gerrard insists he is already looking forward to the start
of the new season, which for Liverpool begins with a
Champions League first-round qualifier on July 12 or 13.

Liverpool face fight for Reina
Villarreal goalkeeper Jose Reina has firmly declared his
desire to play for Champions League winners Liverpool and
their "legendary" coach, Rafael Benitez.
Reina's transfer to the Merseyside club has long been
anticipated but his agent said on Monday Liverpool are just
one of several teams vying for his services.
"We are listening to the offers," said Garcia Quilon to PA
International.
"Liverpool is one of the possibilities but the player also
has other offers from England, Spain and Italy."

Midfielder passes medical and completes
transfer
Czech midfielder Vladimir Smicer has passed his medical with
Bordeaux and signed a 2-year contract with the French
outfit. Personal terms have been agreed and the deal has now
been rubber-stamped.
"Bordeaux is a beautiful seaside city and Les Girondins were
always at the top of the French league," said Vlad, who
completed the free transfer a few hours ago.
"The last season was not an ideal one for them, they will
certainly want to get back to the top in the new one. I will
be glad to be able to help them.
"Out of all the offers I had, I like this one the most.
Bordeaux wanted me last year after the European
Championships but I had to undergo knee surgery and was
sidelined for half a season.
"Their interest remained, however, and that is the most
important thing for any player when seeking a transfer."

Traore not keen on Houllier
Liverpool defender Djimi Traore has revealed that the French
players at Anfield felt ostracized during Gerard Houllier's
spell at the helm.
Whilst appreciating the work Houllier did on Merseyside,
Traore believes the French contingent at the club were not
given a fair crack of the whip.
Traore was very much on the periphery during Houllier's
tenure but the arrival of Rafa Benitez has revitalised his
career at Anfield.
The big stopper continued to reveal that had Houllier stayed
in charge then he would have been forced to leave.
''Houllier did a lot of work - he built a great training
centre,'' Traore told L'Equipe.
''He was much appreciated by the Englishmen and I can see
why.
''But a lot of the French players didn't have a chance to
play and express themselves.
''We had to work twice as hard to play. So, I have a mixed
view on Houllier.
''Today I proved that it is not down to him that I was there
- I deserve to play for Reds.
''Personally, in the end, I didn't trust him anymore. I was
upset.

Lineker blasts Kewell deal
Former England striker Gary Lineker has branded the transfer
of Australia midfielder Harry Kewell from Leeds United to
Liverpool in 2003 as "murky." Lineker was giving evidence to
the High Court on Monday, in a case that must decide if his
piece in Sunday Telegraph had libelled Kewell.
Lineker, who is being sued for damages, told the court he
had actually "narrated" the piece to another journalist for
him to write up, rather than writing it himself.
The former England captain said he was moved to comment
after hearing a radio broadcast in which Bernie Mandic,
Kewell's agent, had said Liverpool were to pay five million
pounds ($9.01 million) for the player, out of which Mandic
was to receive two million pounds in agent's fees.
"That seemed an extraordinary amount for an agent in a
deal," said Lineker.
Asked why he decided to comment on the transfer to the
Sunday Telegraph, Lineker said: "Because it is a subject I
feel very, very strongly about.
"I have seen many examples of this sort of deal. It is the
sort of deal that does not do the image of the game any good
whatsoever.
"It is a sport that is very much a part of my life and I
care about it."

Rafa plays down Guti talk
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez has played down reports linking
the club with a move for Real Madrid's Guti.
Fresh reports emanating from Spain have suggested that
Liverpool were lining up a move for the unhappy midfielder.
Guti is believed to considering his future at Real after
growing increasingly frustrated at his lack of first team
chances at El Santiago Bernabeu.
Real are thought to be ready to let Guti leave the club and
Juventus are reported to be keen on his services.
Benitez has admitted he is aware of Guti, but dismissed
speculation that suggested he was hoping to sign him -
citing his price tag as problematic.
"There are many people at Real Madrid that we are aware of,
but we really know our economic limitations," Benitez told
El Mundo Deportivo.
"And there are players that cannot leave and there are
others we do not want, but the press link them to us even
though this is not true."
Benitez is believed to have already outlined his targets to
bolster his European champions and it appears Guti is not on
his list.

Nando sets new Euro target
Fernando Morientes is determined to add to his Champions
League goal tally following Uefa's decision to let Liverpool

The 29-year-old arrived at Anfield last season but was

But the former Real Madrid marksman wants to return to the
form he showed at Monaco in 2003-04, when he was the top
scorer in the competition while on loan with the French
club.
"After being in the stands for the whole of the last
European campaign, I'm overjoyed about being able to play in
the Champions League again," Morientes told the club's
official website.
"I want to be top scorer in the competition again, as I was
with Monaco, and win the trophy with Liverpool."

Blatter: Liverpool must go to Japan
FIFA president Sepp Blatter has told Liverpool they must
play in the Club World Championship.
Liverpool face an extended fixture list following UEFA's
decision allow the Anfield club into next season's Champions
League first qualifying round as defending champions.
But any plans to lighten the load by withdrawing from
December's Club World Championship in Japan will not be
tolerated, according to Blatter.
The tournament will incorporate the Toyota Cup, a play-off
between the European and South American club champions.
"They must play the Toyota Cup because it is binding for
them for 2005," Blatter told the Daily Mail.
"The cup is in Japan and they will have to travel. Do you
think they won't play?
"They will play."

Owen prepared for Real exit
England striker Michael Owen accepts he may be forced out of
Real Madrid as the Spanish giants look to strengthen
following a second season without a trophy.
Owen joined Real from Liverpool last summer and has not
ruled out a quick return to the Premiership.
"If someone comes and tells me there is a club interested in
me and that I have to go, then I will have to do that."
Owen expects changes at Real in a bid to fill the trophy
cabinet at the Bernabeu.
He added: "I understand the way it is. A year without titles
- then another after that. That's not for Real Madrid.
"The president (Florentino Perez) and the management will
decide which players have to leave and which will come.
"It's the same at Real Madrid as other clubs."
Owen has already been linked with moves to Arsenal,
Manchester United, Chelsea, Newcastle and former club
Liverpool.
