Liverpool signing Babel is the new Henry
It may sound a bit steep for a 20-year old still making his
way in the game, but Marco van Basten, no less, is adamant
Liverpool have acquired another Thierry Henry with their
£11.5million outlay on Ryan Babel.
"He has all the potential to become the next Thierry Henry,"
he said. "The pace, movement, finishing, feel for the game —
it's all there. If he keeps developing and improving there
is no saying what he might achieve in
the game."

Babel lured by Liverpool
Ajax striker Ryan Babel admits he was very easily persuaded
to join Liverpool.
The Holland Under 21 international will join The Reds on a
five-year deal on Friday after the two clubs agreed an
£11.5million fee.
Babel believes he has an important role to play for Rafa
Benitez's side next season and is excited by his move to
Anfield.
"I am very happy with it," Babel told Ajax TV.
"I listened to what they had to say and I got a great
feeling about the club.
"I have made a choice with my heart. The coach has big plans
for me."
Babel is sad to be departing Ajax but says he will always
remain attached to the Dutch giants.
"I am at Ajax to say goodbye to everyone, and I must say
that's quite difficult," he added.
"I think I will miss the fans, the ones that have always
supported me, the guys (Ajax team-mates) of course and the
coach.
"I certainly leave Ajax with pain in my heart. I will come
to Amsterdam quite often, and then I will come to visit the
club."

Benayoun completes Anfield move
West Ham midfielder Yossi Benayoun has completed his move to
Liverpool, signing a four-year deal with the Anfield club.
Benayoun completed his protracted transfer by committing
himself to the club until 2011.
The two Barclays Premier League clubs spent several weeks
haggling over the value of the 27-year-old, who had held off
signing a new contract at Upton Park once he learned of
Liverpool's interest.
However, a fee - believed to be £5million - was finally
agreed on Wednesday and the formalities of the deal were
completed with the player on Thursday.

Smicer signs for Slavia
Czech Republic midfielder Vladimir Smicer will return to his
homeland next season after agreeing terms with Slavia
Prague.
The 34-year-old has signed a one-year deal with an option
for a further season at the 1.Liga outfit, who finished
second in the Czech top flight last term.
A Champions League winner with Liverpool in 2005, Smicer
previously played for Slavia between 1993 and 1996, winning
the title in his final season, before sealing a move to
French Ligue 1 outfit Lens.
He returns to the Czech capital following a two-year stint
with Bordeaux.
Smicer said: "I am returning to the club I have grown up
with.
"I want to help Slavia in the Czech league as well as in the
Champions League qualification."

Liverpool agree £11.5 Babel fee
Liverpool have agreed an £11.5 million fee for Ryan Babel,
the Ajax winger.
A statement on the Dutch club's website said: "The attacker
[Babel], who had a contract at Ajax up to July 1 2010, has
signed an agreement for
five years.”
Babel, who has also been a transfer target for Arsenal, was
a member of the Netherlands team that won the under-21
European Championships on home soil in June.

Liverpool winger loaned to Saints
Southampton have secured the services of 19-year-old
Liverpool winger Adam Hammill on a season-long loan.
Saints beat off strong competition from Scottish champions
Celtic to sign the England Under 19 international, who can
operate on either flank.
Manager George Burley said: "He is a young player who did
very well on loan at Dunfermline last season.
"He is a quick player who likes to take people on. He has
bags of potential and I am very pleased to have got him."

Finnan signs
Steve Finnan is set to sign a contract extension with the
Reds.
Finnan has been offered a two year deal with the option of a

Argentina reach final
Argentina have reached the final of the Copa America.
Javier Mascherano was part of the Argentina side that
comfortably beat Mexico 3-0 in their Copa America semi-final
last night. Reported Liverpool target Gabriel Heinze opened
the scoring, Lionel Messi scored the second before Juan
Riquelme wrapped things up.
Argentina will meet Brazil in the final this Sunday.

Dudek makes Real Madrid move
Real Madrid have snapped up Jerzy Dudek on a free transfer
as back-up to Iker Casillas following his release by
Liverpool at the end of last season.
Bernd Schuster gave the green light to complete the deal
after officially taking the reins at the Bernabéu earlier
this week.
Madrid have been after a new keeper following the sale of
highly-rated youth team product Diego López to Villarreal
for €6m last month.
Dudek was released by Liverpool after six seasons on
Merseyside as he was unable to earn a regular place in the
team ahead of José Reina.
Having spent the last two seasons playing second fiddle to
one Madrid-born custodian, Dudek will now perform the same
task in the Spanish captial itself.
Casillas is the undoubted number one, but the club's
technical staff wanted experienced cover rather than to
promote a keeper from their youth team.

Heinze flattered by interest
Gabriel Heinze has admitted it feels good to be linked with
the likes of Liverpool.
Rafa Benitez is reportedly interested in the Manchester
United defender, who has struggled to keep his place at Old
Trafford since the emergence of Patrice Evra.
Speculation also suggests Juventus and Real Madrid are keen
on Heinze, and the Argentine is refusing to rule anything
out at this stage.
However, he insists he is thankful to Manchester United and
will not make a decision on his future until he returns from
the Copa America in Venezuela.
"The interest in me from important teams such as Liverpool,
Juventus and Real Madrid makes me feel proud," Heinze, who
has two years remaining on his United contract, told the
Daily Express.
"But I still don't know what I'm going to do in the future
and I'm going to start thinking about that after the Copa
America.
"I feel comfortable in Manchester and I'm very grateful for
everything I've received there."

Hicks hints at more signings
Liverpool co-chairman Tom Hicks says that he expects Rafael
Benitez to make at least one more major signing once the
deals for Ryan Babel and Yossi Benayoun are completed.
Several players continue to be linked with the Reds and
Hicks has hinted that the spending spree is not over.
"Rafa has done a great job," said Hicks. "We talked to him
about a plan and it has gone pretty much how we agreed it
would go.
"The first was to get existing core players on our team to
sign extensions, it was critical to get those guys locked
up.
"Then we started with process of getting new players in. I
wouldn't rule Rafa out for one more (transfer). I know the
team is going to be
a better team.
"Part of the plan Rafa explained was that we needed to have
more depth as it is a long season, particularly in the
Premier League.
"He explained to George and me that we were able to compete
better in the Champions League because of the format than we
were in the nine to 10 months of the Premier League. We
tried to add to that depth and I think we have."

Babel agrees terms and passes medical
Ryan Babel has agreed personal terms and passed a medical at
Melwood this afternoon, but Liverpool have yet to reach an
agreement with Ajax over the transfer fee for the
20-year-old.
The Dutch giants gave Babel permission to speak to Liverpool
yesterday and the Reds expect to tie-up the transfer over
the next couple of days for around £10m.
Liverpool are also expected to snap-up Yossi Benayoun from
West Ham United shortly.

Benayoun excites Benitez
Rafael Benitez believes Yossi Benayoun will be an ideal
replacement for Luis Garcia as he is desperate to play for
Liverpool.
The Israel midfielder is set to secure a deal at Anfield
after a fee, believed to be £5million, was agreed with West
Ham.
He could be joined by £10million-rated Ryan Babel in a
remarkable double swoop after Ajax gave Liverpool permission
to talk to the player.
Holland Under-21 winger Babel is reportedly on his way to
Merseyside for a medical.
Benayoun comes with the right credentials, according to
Benitez, who sees similarities with Garcia now at Atletico
Madrid.
"Maybe Luis is a player who scores more goals and Benayoun
tends to make more assists," Benitez told the Liverpool
Echo.
"Like Luis, he is a very technical, clever player with a lot
of game intelligence."

Thommo: Benitez still building
People will argue that after splashing £20m on Fernando
Torres this summer the pressure is on Rafa Benitez to
deliver the title to Liverpool.
But it is difficult to expect the likes of Fernando Torres
to fire the Reds to glory in his first year in English
football as we have seen in the past with Didier Drogba at
Chelsea.
This is the first time since Benitez arrived at Anfield that
he has been able to spend like Manchester United and Chelsea
on big players.
Yes he has spent a lot in his three years at the club but
this is the first time he has been able to go out and spend
£20m+ on one player.
As Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho will know having that
type of money to spend brings its own pressures and Rafa
will have to deal with that.
After reaching the Champions League final for the second
time in three years this season was always going to be a big
one but with the investment from the new owners Rafa has to
deliver.

Starlets sign pro contracts with Reds
Liverpool starlets Martin Hansen and Michael Collins have
signed their first professional contracts after turning 17.
Goalkeeper Hansen was a key part of the club's Youth Cup
winning side last year and is a regular for Denmark
Under-17s. He will now spend two years at Melwood.
Collins, a skilful striker who plays for Republic of Ireland
Under-17s, will begin his two-year contract at the Academy.
Academy manager John Owens said: "Martin Hansen has all the
qualities required and is very mature. He's at Melwood
already, and while you don't want to push them too far too
soon, that shows the potential he has.
"Michael Collins is a skilful, clever striker who's been
with us for a year. He's had to bide his time because
there's been older strikers ahead of him, but he'll be
hopeful of making more of an impact this year."

Vale make Fowler approach
Port Vale chairman Bill Bratt has confirmed the League One
club have made an approach to sign former Liverpool and
England striker Robbie Fowler.
The 32-year-old is a free agent after leaving Liverpool at
the end of last season and is a target for Coca-Cola
Championship clubs Leicester and Cardiff and has also
reopened talks over a move to Sydney FC, according to
reports in Australia.
Whether or not a player who has scored 162 Premier League
goals would fancy playing against the likes of Yeovil and
Cheltenham remains to be seen but Bratt was prepared to take
a chance on the move.
He said: "We've approached Robbie Fowler's agent to see
whether he would be interested in playing for Port Vale.
"We obviously can't afford to pay him what other clubs can
but he's a very wealthy man anyway and we hope he may want
to play for
the pleasure of it.
"I believe Cardiff are offering him £8,000 a week and we
can't match that.
"But it's a chance for us as far as I'm concerned. We've
asked the question and if the answer's no, it's no."

Reds agree Benayoun fee
Liverpool are closing in on Yossi Benayoun after agreeing a
fee with West Ham United for the Israel midfielder.
The Anfield club have also been given permission to talk to
Ajax winger Ryan Babel.
Benayoun rejected a new contract at Upton Park while
Dutchman Babel was one of the stars of the recent European
Under-21 Championship.
Chief Executive Rick Parry told Liverpool's official
website, www.liverpoolfc.tv: "We've agreed the fee with West
Ham for Yossi Benayoun.
"We're not quite there with Ryan Babel yet, but we've now
been given permission by Ajax to talk to the player. We hope
to reach an agreement with Ajax very shortly."
Liverpool have already stated their ambition this summer by
signing strikers Fernando Torres and Andriy Voronin.

Liverpool have signed Millwall striker David Amoo for an
undisclosed fee and he will start training at the club's
academy on Wednesday.
Academy head of recruitment Malcolm Elias was delighted to
land the 17-year-old, saying: "David is an exciting young
talent with fantastic physical prowess."
Two youth team players, goalkeeper Martin Hansen and striker
Michael Collins, have signed their first professional
contracts after turning 17.
Liverpool's backroom team has also been strengthened with
Spaniard Angel Vales appointed as reserve team coach and
head of technical analysis.
The 40-year-old, who has worked at clubs in Spain and
Portugal and has been teaching football at degree level at
the University of La Coruna, said: "I am delighted that the
boss has chosen me for this position and has faith in me to
make it a success."

Reds told to hurry for Babel
Liverpool have been urged to tie up a deal for Ajax forward
Ryan Babel by the end of the weekend.
According to Dutch newspaper AD Sportwereld, the Reds have
increased their offer for the 20-year-old by €2m to €17m
(£11.5m).
Babel’s representative Winnie Haatrecht is keen to push the
transfer through quickly with the player due to report back
to Ajax on Monday for the first time since the European
Under-21 Championships.
“We need to have an agreement before Monday,” said
Haatrecht.
“And to go to Ajax first and go away again after that is
something we don’t want.”
But Haatrecht is happy with the speed at which dealings have
taken place so far with the Merseysiders.
“If all is good in a transfer, it always goes fast,” he
said.
“Up until now it indeed looks as if the speed is right,
that’s a good sign. But there is no white smoke yet, so we
will wait and see what happens.”

Sol Campbell backing for Jamie Carragher
Portsmouth’s Sol Campbell has backed Jamie Carragher’s
decision to call time on his England career “except in the
case of an absolute emergency”.
Campbell, who was dropped from the national squad when Steve
McClaren took over from Sven-Goran Eriksson last summer,
said: “You can’t blame him because I totally understand the
situation he is in.
“He wants to play – but he wants to play in his position.
“There is nothing wrong with that. He doesn’t want to become
a makeshift selection, playing on the right or on the left.
That is just filling a gap, not what he does week in, week
out for Liverpool.
“He wants the recognition for his ability in that position
because that is where you are going to see him at his best.
“For me, Carragher is a fantastic defender. He has shown it
over the years and is one of the best in England.”

the Reds' captain.
"Since I've been in the first team I can't remember us
making such a major statement of intent in the transfer
market as this."

Reds in Setanta TV deal
Liverpool today announced details of a multi-million pound
deal with Setanta Sports as they prepare to launch the
club’s TV channel.
Subscribers to the Irish sports network, which recently won
the rights to screen 46 live Premiership games this season,
will now receive Liverpool TV as part of their package.
From September, Liverpool fans will be able to watch delayed
coverage of all the club’s fixtures, as well as live reserve
games and six hours a day of original broadcasts.
Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry, who chose Setanta’s
three-year offer ahead of a rival bid from Sky, believes
it’s an exciting development for
the club.
He said: “We’ve been thinking about this for some time, but
until Setanta came to us with an extremely attractive offer,
I wasn’t entirely convinced by the traditional model of club
TV stations.
“What’s attractive about this package is it’s available to
all subscribers. The channel is effectively a free addition
on top of what’s available as part of the Setanta Sports
pack.
“The channel heralds a new era for Liverpool Football Club.

Bellamy explains Reds exit
Craig Bellamy has revealed his desire to play regular
first-team football was the main reason behind joining West
Ham.
The former Newcastle and Blackburn ace left Liverpool on
Tuesday in a deal costing The Hammers £7.5million.
"I'll be turning 28 this season so I want to start playing
football now," he told Sky Sports News.
"I think I played 10 or 11 full games last year. I want to
try and improve on that and play every week.
"Obviously with one or two more signings at Liverpool it was
going to be a lot more difficult to get into the team.
"You don't walk away from Liverpool too easily, but I wanted
to play football.
"It's important I play week-in, week-out to be able to lead
my country out as well."

Purse questions Fowler pursuit
Darren Purse has warned Cardiff off signing former Liverpool
ace Robbie Fowler after questioning whether the club can
afford his wages.
Fowler has been released by Liverpool and the Bluebirds have
made it known publicly they are interested in extending his
career at Ninian Park next season.
However, Purse has urged caution in the pursuit of the
31-year-old and, while he admits the striker would be a
great acquisition, he says the club now need to be prudent
when taking care of their finances.
"He'd be a great signing for us, but it would cost a few
quid," Purse told the South Wales Echo. "You cannot put the
club in jeopardy to sign one player, you have to look at the
bigger picture.
"The finances are all settled now - is it worth putting the
club into jeopardy for one player?"

Rafa: Respect Carra
Rafa Benitez says Jamie Carragher’s decision on his
international future should be respected by the whole
country.
Carragher will speak to Steve McClaren again before the next
international with Germany on August 22.
“In any situation like this we need to think about what’s
best for the player, the club and the country,” said
Benitez, who today completed the £7.5 million sale of Craig
Bellamy to West Ham.
“If the player is physically and mentally fit to play in
every game, it’s naturally better for his career and the
country or club he’s playing for.
“That’s what Carra is thinking about because I know he is
someone who never gives less than 100 per cent.
“Everyone knows he is a fantastic professional who wants to
perform at the very best level possible in every game he
plays.
“We must all respect any decision he makes, because it is
certain he is thinking about what’s good for everyone.”

Houllier back to thank hospital that saved him
Former Liverpool FC manager Gerard Houllier was today
returning to the hospital that saved his life, to open a new
operating theatre.
He was opening the state-of-the-art operating room at the
Cardiothoracic Centre in Broadgreen.
Mr Houllier had 11 hours of emergency surgery at the
hospital after being struck down by a dissected aorta during
a Liverpool home game
six years ago.
The new operating theatre, known as a hybrid theatre, is
used for the treatment of aneurysms of the aorta, a serious
and potentially life-threatening condition where part of the
body’s main artery wall becomes swollen. If the swelling was
allowed to rupture it could prove fatal.

West Ham have paid a club record £7.5million fee to land the
former Newcastle and Blackburn hit-man.

Benitez close to signing Ryan Babel
Liverpool are on the brink of making Ryan Babel their second
major summer signing after tabling an improved offer for the
Dutch starlet.
The Anfield outfit made an initial bid of around £10million
for the 20-year-old attacker only for his club Ajax to knock
back their opening gambit.
But Liverpool returned yesterday with an increased offer
that is believed to be nearer to the Dutch club’s £13.5m
(20m euro) valuation of the player.
Now Ajax are increasingly resigned to losing Babel, who is
understood to have set his heart on a move to Anfield.
Ajax technical director Martin van Geel said: “Liverpool are
serious and have made another offer of a lot more.
“Because they want him so much, it looks as if Babel will be
off and Ajax will be losing him.”
The versatile Babel, who can play in attack or on either
wing, has been courted by Premier League rivals Arsenal and
Newcastle United in
recent months.
