Rafa rues lack of luck
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez struggled to arrive at an
explanation for his side's defeat to Manchester United,
after John O'Shea's injury time winner stole the spoils at
Anfield.
"I would have trouble explaining how we lost that in
Spanish; in English I find it almost impossible," said
Benitez.
"We dominated the game, were in control and had plenty of
attacks. Sometimes football is all about luck. When you have
so much of the play and make chances without scoring, you
must be careful against a team as good as United."

Fergie delight at 'massive' win
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson could barely
contain his glee after watching his side grind out a
'massive' result at Anfield.
"It was a fantastic result," he told Sky Sports. "We had a
lot of narrow escapes and Liverpool upset our rhythm.
"They will feel very unlucky and they deserve to. It is a
massive result for us. We broke away late on against Fulham
and scored and now we`ve done it here.
"We`ve had that bit of luck in the last two weeks but you
need luck if you are to win titles."

Last gasp United steal spoils
If Premiership titles are won by grinding out results
without playing well then this could just be Manchester
United's year as they escaped from Anfield with a three
point haul, courtesy of a 1-0 victory over a Liverpool side
that bossed the whole of the second half.
The most intriguing aspects of a game that was more mediocre
than magnificent all occurred in the final few minutes, as
United cemented a 12 point advantage over Chelsea thanks to
substitute John O'Shea's winner in injury-time.
It was another substitute, this time Liverpool's Peter
Crouch that just moments before was denied by a world class
save, as Edwin Van der Sar sprawled across his goal to
produce a title winning intervention.
United's afternoon was tempered somewhat when with five
minutes remaining Paul Scholes lost his head in swinging but
missing with an air punch in the direction of Xabi Alonso,
that culminated in not quite a knock-out but a red card
nevertheless.

Kuyt and Bellamy start v United
Dirk Kuyt and Craig Bellamy will lead the Liverpool attack
in today's Premiership clash with Manchester United at
Anfield after Rafa Benitez kept his word and named a strong
side despite an impending Champions League return against
Barcelona.
Reds Captain Steven Gerrard will continue on the right side
of the midfield with Momo Sissoko and Xabi Alonso in the
middle and Mark Gonzalez on the left.
Liverpool: Reina, Finnan, Riise, Carragher, Agger, Gerrard,
Alonso, Sissoko, Gonzalez, Kuyt, Bellamy. Subs: Dudek,
Hyypia, Aurelio, Crouch, Pennant.

Benitez joy at Andriy swoop
Andriy Veronin has been tipped by Rafa Benitez to prove one
of the bargains of the summer when he completes his move to
Liverpool.
The 27-year-old Ukraine international joins the Reds on a
free Bosman transfer at the end of the season.
Although more high profile signings are expected, especially
once the American takeover is rubber-stamped, Benitez
insists the Bayer Leverkusen striker’s low profile is not a
reflection on his quality.
“People should not think that just because Veronin is a free
transfer he is not a good player,” said Benitez.
“Veronin has a lot experience in the Bundesliga and has
played a lot of games for his country, including the World
Cup.
“He is more of a second striker. If you were to compare him
with others, he’s more like Craig Bellamy in his style of
play than Peter Crouch.
“He is a runner and a hard worker who can score goals. Maybe
between ten and 15
a season.”

FRIDAY 2 |
Midfielder set to leave on loan
Liverpool have agreed that midfielder Danny Guthrie can join
Championship side Southampton on an emergency loan for one
month until March 31.
The player has yet to sign on the dotted line for the
Saints. Back in January he was awarded with a new contract
that will keep him at Anfield until June 2009.
A product of the Academy, Guthrie made his first team
breakthrough this season and made his first start for the
Reds in the Champions League tie away in Galatasaray.

Benitez wont rest players
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez insists he will not
be resting any of his key players against Manchester United
despite the fact they will then face Barcelona in the
Champions League on Tuesday.
Liverpool will play United at Anfield on Saturday in the
lunchtime match live on skysports before hosting the
European Champions just three days later.

Fergie surprised by ref choice
Sir Alex Ferguson is surprised Martin Atkinson
has replaced Graham Poll as referee for Manchester United's
trip to Liverpool.
Poll was originally scheduled to officiate Saturday's game
at Anfield, live on Sky Sports 1, but picked up an injury in
midweek.
The experienced official was injured during Blackburn
Rovers' FA Cup replay with Arsenal and his booking has been
taken by Atkinson.
But the decision to appoint Atkinson as the referee for the
clash between the arch-rivals has taken United boss Ferguson
by surprise.
"I think Graham Poll is the most experienced referee," said
Ferguson on Sky Sports News.
"So we have gone from the most experienced, to the least
experienced referee and
that's a surprise."

Crouch delays nose job
Peter Crouch will delay an operation on his nose to make
himself available for Liverpool's crucial matches against
Manchester United and Barcelona.
The England striker suffered a broken nose after a clash
with Sheffield United's Rob Hulse at Anfield last Saturday
but will be available for selection on Saturday lunchtime
against the Red Devils and the European Cup holders, in the
Champions League last-16 second leg, on Tuesday.

Liverpool set to recall big guns
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is expected to recall his
big guns for the Premiership clash against Manchester United
at Anfield on Saturday.
Benitez rested seven players from the team that beat
Barcelona in the Champions League for last weekend's victory
over Sheffield United.
With the Champions League second leg against Barcelona
coming up on Tuesday, Benitez will have to consider who he
risks against the Premiership leaders.
Steve Finnan will make his 400th career league appearance if
he plays, while Jose Reina, Craig Bellamy, Daniel Agger,
Mohamed Sissoko, Dirk Kuyt and Xabi Alonso - none of whom
was in last weekend's starting line-up - are expected to
return.
Liverpool (from): Reina, Finnan, Agger, Carragher, Riise,
Gerrard, Alonso, Sissoko, Pennant, Kuyt, Bellamy, Crouch,
Gonzalez, Fowler, Hyypia, Dudek, Arbeloa, Zenden,
Mascherano.

Duo out of Anfield trip
Darren Fletcher and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will miss United's
crucial Premiership trip to Liverpool on Saturday lunchtime.
Fletcher, who suffered an ankle knock in the 3-2 FA Cup win
at Reading on Tuesday night and will be out for two weeks.
Solskjaer is unavailable until the Blackburn game at Old
Trafford on 31 March following a minor operation on his knee
earlier this week.
"Everyone else is fit aside from Darren and Ole," confirmed
Sir Alex at his pre-match press briefing.
"Ole had a minor operation to wash out the knee. He should
be back for the match against Blackburn. It's nothing
serious, but it means he misses the Bolton, Lille and
Middlesbrough.
"He will be back for the game against Blackburn, though.
It's good timing to get it done with the internationals
coming up soon."

Carra eyes Prem glory
Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher says he will not be happy
until he wins the Premiership title.
Carragher has won every trophy going with The Reds, although
helping the Merseysiders be crowned champions has eluded the
versatile defender.
The England international has doubts whether Liverpool can
claw back the 16-point gap on Manchester United this term
and make a serious challenge.
Carragher is hoping seeing off The Red Devils this weekend,
live on Sky Sports 1, can cement third place before making a
renewed bid for the title next season.
"Just like the fans, I want to bring the Premiership title
home," said Carragher.
"It's the last thing I need to tick off in my career and I
won't be happy until we've done it.

Saha anxious to land Anfield blow
Louis Saha has called on his Manchester United team-mates to
put Chelsea through mental torture by beating Liverpool at
Anfield on Saturday.
Already nine points clear in the title race, the Red Devils
would widen the gap to 12 if they become the first team to
beat Rafael Benitez's men on home soil in the Premiership
this season.
Given the remainder of their run-in, it is feasible United
could even escape Merseyside with a draw and feel confident
about lifting the championship trophy in May.
However, with Chelsea due to play the first of what would
then be two matches in hand over Sir Alex Ferguson's team at
Portsmouth on Saturday evening, Saha knows how much pressure
a United win would pile on their only serious rivals.
"It is going to be a massive, massive game at Liverpool,"
said the French forward.
"If we get a win at Anfield it will open up a big gap and
give us a great psychological advantage for us over
Chelsea."

Carragher: Paisley deserves a knighthood
Jamie Carragher has thrown his weight behind the campaign
for former Liverpool boss Bob Paisley to be honoured with a
posthumous knighthood.
Almost 23,000 names have now been added to an on-line
petition that has been registered with the Prime Minister's
website.
Carragher may have grown up as an Evertonian but he's well
aware of Paisley's achievements during a glittering
nine-year spell in the Anfield hot-seat and was only too
pleased to pledge his support.
"I was never fortunate enough to play under Bob Paisley, but
everyone at Anfield knows what a great manager and a great
man he was," says the Reds vice-captain.
"You only have to look at his record as a manager to realise
that he was up there with the best – three European Cups
speaks for itself.
"He probably wasn't one for personal accolades, because by
all accounts he was very humble, but if there is any
possibility of him being knighted then it should happen."

Inter eyeing Gerrard capture
Juventus reportedly face competition from Inter Milan if
they want to sign Liverpool's Steven Gerrard.
According to Corriere dello Sport, Inter president Massimo
Moratti is planning a major bid for the Anfield captain when
the transfer window re-opens in the summer.

Reina impressed with new signings
Pepe Reina has been impressed with the signings made during
the January transfer window.
Rafael Benitez prepared for the future during the last
transfer window, by signing upcoming talents like Daniele
Padelli, Emiliano Insua and Jordy Brouwer.
"They might not be involved in the first team yet, but I
think Rafa Benitez has brought some great young talent into
the club this season with the likes of Padelli, Insua and
Brouwer," Reina told website icons.com.
"One must give them time, but I believe they can be very
good footballers - just as good as Arsenal's youngsters.
"I like Liverpool's idea of investing in young players for
the future. This will prove effective over the next few
years."

Finnan reaches milestone
Steve Finnan should make his 400th league appearance
tomorrow.
If Finnan is selected against Man Utd tomorrow, it will be
the 400th league appearance of his career. 115 of the 399
league appearances to date have been for Liverpool.

Bell sheds light on Riise incident
Craig Bellamy has admitted he "lost it" with John Arne Riise
during Liverpool's Portugal break when it was alleged he
brandished a golf club.
Bellamy is reported to have been fined for the incident - a
figure of £80,000 has been mentioned - and he has revealed
he confronted Riise in the player's hotel room while
Liverpool were on a sunshine break on the Algarve 10 days
ago.
He told the Daily Mirror: "It started when we were all doing
a bit of karaoke. I only sang one song and that was Red, Red
Wine by UB40. That was because Jerzy Dudek was drinking it.
That's how silly it all was.
"A lot of the lads wanted Riise to get up there next because
he hadn't turned up at the dinner earlier and I tried to get
him up, too.
"I wasn't that bothered whether he wanted to sing or not so
I sat back down but he wasn't too happy about me trying to
get him to sing so he let me know about it.
"The situation was calmed down then but when I was walking
back to the hotel with Steve Finnan, who I was rooming with,
I lost control for a few seconds.
"I went and confronted 'Ginger' and I said to him 'don't be
doing that in front of the players again'.
"And that was really about it. I didn't want to cause a
scene in front of everybody else. I just wanted to talk to
him about it alone.
"John has been great about it. Straight away the next
morning we were training together. There's no problem now."

Rio ready for Liverpool test
Rio Ferdinand will use a close encounter with Liverpool's
fans as his motivation when Manchester United attempt to
claim a vital three points at Anfield on Saturday.
The England centre-back, 28, was a spectator when the sides
last clashed on Merseyside in February last year.
It proved an unhappy day all round for United, who fell to
Peter Crouch's solitary goal to crash out of the FA Cup and
saw striker Alan Smith carried off with an horrific broken
leg.
But for Ferdinand the day was memorable for the rare chance
to watch the fierce rivals fight it out from the Anfield
stands - where he was given a hot reception by the Reds
fans.
"We got pelted with obscenities and coins and stuff, but it
was a great atmosphere, it was something that will stay with
me forever," he told Sky Sports News.

Parry: We’ll keep the Kop at new ground
Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry insists the club are
fully committed to ensuring the Stanley Park Stadium
incorporates a distinctive Kop End.
Designs for the new arena reveal that, unike the current
Anfield, there won’t be one larger stand eclipsing the
others, which has prompted some fears the impact of the
current Kop won’t be replicated.
The Reds chief says both the current hierarchy and the new
owners have been considering several alternative ways to
ensure the most famous stand in football is recreated within
the modern stadium.
George Gillett and Tom Hicks are in the process of analysing
what minor improvements can be made to the current design,
but there will be no compromise on preserving the The Kop
End.
"The plan is to have a single tier Kop. There’s no question
of that. That’s one of
the priorities we don’t want to change," said Parry.

Kuyt hails van der Sar as world's best
Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt has hailed friend and Holland
team-mate Edwin van der Sar as the best goalkeeper in the
world.
Kuyt will come up against van der Sar when Liverpool face
arch rivals Manchester United at Anfield on Saturday.
Kuyt said: "It will be particularly good for me to play
against Edwin. He's a legend in Holland and, if you can
score against him, you can score against anyone in the
world."

Fowler realistic over United start
Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler admits his chances of facing
Manchester United are slim despite his penalty double
against Sheffield United.
Much will depend on the fitness of striker Peter Crouch, who
is recovering from a broken nose and 12 stitches following
the boot in the face he received from Blades striker Rob
Hulse in Liverpool's 4-0 win.
Fowler made only his third start for Liverpool this season
against the Blades but he accepts he could be back on the
bench against United.
He said: "I have no illusions, there are a few people coming
back from injury. Let's just wait and see."

Parry excited at new era
Rick Parry says exciting times are ahead for Liverpool
football club following the takeover by George Gillett and
Tom Hicks.
Parry has just returned from a trip to Dallas where he spent
time with the new owners, and returned confident that a
bright new era is unfolding for the Reds.
"There will be a lot of change, but I wouldn't see it as a
revolution. It's about preserving the things which are good
and building upon them. As ever, the first priority is
success on the pitch. That unites everybody."
